Kromlech has released today four different kinds of basing sands. You can find all of them in company's webstore: 'Basing Sand – Fine' (size of particles 0.1-0.5mm); 'Basing Sand – Medium' (size of particles 0.5-1mm); 'Basing Sand – Coarse' (size of particles 1-1.5mm); 'Basing Sand – Gravel' (size of particles 1-4mm). Prices are the same – 3.99 EUR for a pot containing at least 150 g of sand. link Basing Sand – Fine link Basing Sand – Medium link Basing Sand – Coarse link Basing Sand – Gravel link Amicalement Armand |

For that price, I'll stick to … well…. sand. |

I've tried various 'brands'; I swore by Tenby South Beach for many years, but then discovered Broadhaven Dunes – a lovely fine powder. I dabbled with Barafundle last year, though even though it's a mile from Broadhaven it's distinctly more coarse. |

There are 17 beaches in Wollongong full of lovely fine South Pacific sand – I'll pass too thanks! |

Bag o Sand, A couple of different sized strainers and you can have all the cheap basing sand you want |

Good lord….nice modeling sand but um, I can get a bag of perfect sifted fine sand for modeling at Michaels Crafts for like $3 USD, a bag that is ten times the amount of those tiny tubs. |

If you don't live near a beach, my local Tesco sells sacks of 'play sand' (very fine, sterlised and salt-free sand) for about £7.50 GBP – enough for years and years of basing. |

I loot my daughter's playground. Not only is it the play-grade sand described above, but it has twigs and pebbles that help give a more irregular appearance that I prefer. I just have to endure the baleful accusing stares of fourth graders… |

25kg builders sand is a couple of quid a sack. link |

50 lbs bag of washed sand at Home Depot: $2.75 USD I have more than the entire slew of players at my LGS would use in a year, much less myself. |
Zargon | 27 Jun 2015 9:31 a.m. PST |
:) but some suckers will buy because its a TM product. Says the dude who walks into his local hardware buys a couple of dollars of washers and the like pulls out a plastic shopping bag and says "Can I borrow a couple of handfuls of builders please?" Never been refused ever :) Cheers happy basing |

If you go round b&q they have loads of sand on the floor round the displays of building products. You'd probably be doing them a favour by cleaning some of it up. |

Like Zargon, everytime I go to Waterloo I bring back some mud and recently took a few handfuls of sand from just above and east of LHS….roughly the site of the sandpit (and you can tell!) Cannot beat the real thing…… |

All that digging DH, you will alter the lay of teh land of our precious battlefield Actually, on reflection, if we all go and do that at the mound maybe we can eradicate that particular eyesore… But hobby sand – please… But I guess people buy teh GW versions, so there must be a market. |

B&Q for me… One bag has just finished… lasted ten years and cost 2 quid. |

Do you find builder's sharp-sand to be rather coarse? I tried it once, but it looked like the chaps were wading through boulders. It was also very hard on the paint-brushes. Since then I've always gone for fine, powdery dune sand (or the play-sand mentioned earlier). |

Got fed up messing about with various grass scatters and went back to straightforward painting of bases. I now use white aquarium sand which can take any colour I want to use; cost me a couple of quid for a bag which will last me years. |

Sharp sand is ok for 54mm, would be unlikely to use it for smaller scales, made a terrain mat for 54mm ancients using it and it was fabulous |
Jemima Fawr | 30 Jun 2015 4:18 a.m. PST |
Ah, aquarium sand… When you said b&q I thought you meant builders' sand. :) |
Jefthing | 30 Jun 2015 12:08 p.m. PST |
I think it was Piers at b&q – my aquarium sand came from the pet section at the Wilton Garden Centre! |

Builders sand and a sieve works just fine for me. I have boxes of various grades which get used for different purposes. |
Andy P | 02 Jul 2015 4:33 a.m. PST |
Aquarium sand will work well for those Pacific beaches without needing to paint it either double whammy. |
Hampshire Hog | 02 Jul 2015 5:47 a.m. PST |
Having a marine aquarium I aways have a good supply of aquarium sand and it works fine. Comes in different grades and colours but I stick to the nice white stuff. |

I just stroll down to the long jump pit at my school and help myself, mind you I've never checked with the PE department if they are OK with this… |

I think it's fair to say that this thread has not gone how sand retailers Kromlech might have hoped. |

Wow! Sand. I thought I had that cover oh so many years ago: Sand: link

DyeHard | 06 Jul 2015 4:09 p.m. PST |
Oh ya! If you do not like the size range in the sand you have, you can always run it through a sieve: link
I guess I should have turned it into a business. |

Funniest TMP thread this year. Tango deserves a medal ;-) |
