I have a Minifigs Macedonian army bought when I was a pup. It lies about, taking up space and rarely sees the light of day. I could not bring myself to bin it so I thought I'd try repainting and rebasing a unit. I think they came out OK and the will be seeing action soon.

I'm glad you upgraded rather than discarded them. |

Minifigs do have a charm all their own. Well done on the refurbishing! |

I might try some pike next, I've got 48 of them. Could mean drilling. |

They look fine – good move on not disposing of them! |

I would recommend replacing the pikes they are too thin and always look wavy. These guys look great. I have a lot of Minifigs mixed in my ancients, they look great. |

Ah not on mine they are armed with telegraph poles my hypaspists have wavy spears though. Either way tou're right replacement is the way forward. |

Those look fabulous! Not sure when you were a "pup" but I wonder if Minifigs had a similar ancients development as they did with the Napoleonic figures? Mine Napoleonic figures are all from the late 70s and early 80s. Are these from the same era and do they still sell them or a newer generation? |

Early 80s Joker, 1982 to be precise. I can remember buying them at a Wargames shop! I think you can still get these from Minifigs. There was though also limited second or maybe third generation Macedonian range. Since we have deemed them a success another view.

Assuming they had at least a second edition since the older ones came in the strips. Not sure about a third, I don't recall ever seeing round bases on the ancients. |

This seems to be the third generation. Some of them look nice. link They are still selling second generation. |

Dave Higgs did embark on a new range of 15mm Ancients that proportionally, was better than anything at the time. (IMHO, still is!) Alexandrian Macedonians and Indians. More were planned but sales were disappointing in the States as while nice, were smaller in stature than Essex and others popular at the time. We had offered DBA armies for Alex-Mac, Indian Republican, Mountain Indian and Classical Indian from the mix. Those pictured look to have come from the Greek and Persian line of second generation.(Singles on rectangular bases) -also known as the "Super Detail" range. Hope this contributes to the discussion. Well worth knowing Tom I had not realised they were smaller 15mm. |
