The new Codex for the Dark Angels has just been released, and I thought a quick review would be appropriate;

Spoiler: It is a good 'un.

There is only one Chapter that matters…

Dark Angels though there spin Chapters count as well.

As for the new Codex I will not buy it due to it costs.

Nice review, but I am not pleased at all with the fact that I can no longer play my Deathwing Terminators as a standalone army using the standard CAD army list without going Unbound.

To sum it up, Master Belial no longer allows you to bring in your DW Terminators as Troops choices. All DW Terminators now count as Elites and there's a new Battle Formation for them called "Deathwing Strike Force," which allows you to fill up to 10 Elite slots (either Terminators or Venerable Dreadnoughts in drop pods). Furthermore, all units in this formation must arrive via deep strike.

So why are all-DW armies now unplayable? Because DW Terminators can no longer deep strike in turn 1, which means that the DW player automatically loses at the end of turn 1 because at the end of any turn when a player has no models on the table, he or she automatically loses.

This really sucks. I think I'm as mad with GW as Mithmee is right now.

How did the Ravenwing fare this time? I heard they nerfed the Darkshroud. Instead of giving the shrouded special rule as its name would imply, it lets you re-roll jinks?

Mithmee26 Jun 2015 8:57 p.m. PST

Well it looks like how they made them better is to give them more saves.

3++ or maybe 2++

So more Saves means better when it actually not.

The game need less saves and more balance.

Plus from looking at some other reviews it is filled with lots of petty pictures and drawings that is not needed but GW will make you pay for them.

Jesus Mith, give it a bleedin' rest, we get it, you think GW is evil, and charges too much, but EVERY thread? your like the Sci-fi Tango!

Is this thread about a Review of the Codex or not?

I do not think it all that good if they think by giving more saves will make them playable.

So Codexes are now up to nearly $60 USD dollars before tax and like $70 USD dollars with tax.

Not worth it at that price.

chuck05 Fezian27 Jun 2015 7:41 p.m. PST

I agree with Mithmee. $60 USD is too much for a codex with ten pages of rules and 150 pages of recycled fluff and stock pictures Ive seen a dozen times before.

Chuck, is it really that bad? I remember grabbing the Legion Of The Damned Codex then finding it was a completely unnecessary book. Nothing in it that wasn't already in the main Marine Codex entry.

I wanted to play Dark Angels in 2nd edition but my friend got to them first, so I played orks. When 3rd was released, he switched to a different army, so I began playing Dark Angels and have ever since.

The new codex is Amazing. Especially Ravenwing.

I used to play pure Deathwing when I started Dark Angels in 3rd edition, but in 4th I began running Ravenwing sometimes. From 5th edition on I had given up on pure Deathwing as more than a "fun" army (though still used it often). Ravenwing had become my primary army. Because of this I was not _too_ upset about not being able to play pure Deathwing.

The new Ravenwing is really tough. I played in a tournament over the weekend and wiped out 2 marine armies (well, one had 2 marines and some drop pods left.) The second marine army had some "ignore cover" ability, but I simply attacked the things that could ignore cover first. The Ravenwing Support Squadron is really good. I used two of them with a Darkshroud in each.

Its great that the Dark Angels finally have a codex that is on par with codex marines!

Centurio Prime14 Jul 2015 11:20 a.m. PST

Chuck, the Darkshroud is Shrouded AND gets to reroll jnk saves. So it has a 2+ rerollable jink save! I can't understand how anyone would think that this is a "nerf".

Centurio Prime14 Jul 2015 11:23 a.m. PST

Chuck05, I don't see how you get "10 pages of rules" in the codex, ESPECIALLY since you didn't even know the Darkshroud rules, it makes me think you haven't bothered to look at the codex before posting about it….

Centurio Prime14 Jul 2015 11:54 a.m. PST

Mithmee? 4 posts in a thread about a codex that you would never buy, because you hate GW and 40k? Seriously?

Maybe GW will publish a mimeograph version of the rules, with the smelly blue ink, and sell it for a nickel. Same for the codex. They could leave out frivolous things like art or background stories. Then people like Mithmee may be able to get back into 40k.

Mithmee14 Jul 2015 12:35 p.m. PST

Well at GW current rate there might not be 40K in the future.

They just killed off WFB for good.

Oh and this now make five posts and I never said I hated 40K only GW.

They are gouging their customers and have been for several years now.

They have managed to kill off everyone of their games except for 40K and after what happen to WFB, well…
