Anyone have some guidance on painting the Mississippi timberclads? Tyler, Lexington, Conestoga? Period drawings alternately show them "light" or "dark"; the photos show "dark." I'm guessing deck tan, everything else black… |

I have always thought them to be raw timber that has been layered in tar or creosote. While initially dark, it would have faded very quickly to browns and grays. I had published a painting guide in two consecutive issues of the ACWGamer E-Zines. Do you subscribe? |

Bill: Here's my take on the Tyler. My research at the time, about 1997, lead me to this look:

Two part artcile on the subject sent to your email address. The look is pretty close to MDIvanic. |

Mine use a darker deck (just my preference is all) and darker hull, but yeah, can't go wrong with brown and tan. |

I got the impression that the timbers were often coated, so I used Reaper walnut or black-brown on the sides, and a lighter color on the deck. |

Hmm, need to repaint my scratch-built Lexington. Right now it's faded black. |

Just like gun carriages they are always painted. Decking will probably be a natural wood colour, with foot fall and regular cleaning. The hull and the superstructure would have been painted, it protects the wood/metal from the weather. Black, white and red are the easiest and most widely used colour on ships and boats. |
