Because removing a destroyed tank or Martian Tripod without leaving at least smoke behind is just plain anti-climactic. Here's a quick tutorial on making (I think) good looking, cheap and easy smoke effects.

Giant smokey columns are good. :)

I really like putting the cheap flickering LED candles in the bases.

My brother is of the opinion that someday we'll see 3D holographic projectors for smoke, fires and explosions. Let's face it, no matter how good a job you do with cotton or the like it just doesn't come up to snuff. Watch how smoke expands out of the muzzle of a cannon and you just can't match that. or smoke coming out of a locomotive or a ship smokestack. Someone needs to invent that, it would be so cool.

At that point, we'll be in VR on horseback giving orders as Napoleon. Until then, we'll have to be satisfied with stuff like this. ;)
