Hi all, I've been considering a purchase of the Flames of War Arab Israeli War's United Arab Republic miniatures with their 40% off sale – but I don't want to game IAW!

My plan is to get some of the infantry, T-55s, at guns/recoilless rifles, and medium mortars (all of soviet type) and then extra dHSK (HMG) models. Along with that a Desert Fort and some obstacles, and I've got a usable defending opposing force for "generic middle eastern opponents" to fight against the US modern troops I've been slowly collecting.

I was hoping to paint them a standard desert (possibly camo) scheme to be relatively generic between Iraq, Syria and also Libya – as I am planning a possible fictional campaign of US vs Libya for the 1986 era (basically a fictional follow-on invasion after the US bombing).

Does this seem like a reasonable approach to anyone (creating the generic enemy for multiple eras)? At 15mm, my theory is that it would be hard to spot many real kit differences, and since nobody in my group is a real middle-eastern forces expert it would all go fairly smoothly. We play a lot of WW2, and there are a TON of soviet figures and tanks to supplement this force for bigger battles, but I really like the idea of a dedicated middle-eastern OPFOR…

They'd be fine, you nailed it with the observation on them being 15mm.

That is exactly what most AK47 armies are – a bunch of guys with AKs and old Russian tanks. Go for it.

I wouldn't even bother with camo, just do them in 'sand' uniforms for regulars and a bunch of raggedy types for irregualrs.

Peter Pig do some nice raggedy types, including rioters wielding machetes and stolen TVs.

Yep, it is a reasonable plan.

Yes , perfect idea!
I'd like to do the same for an AK47 army.
…ie; all Africans 'regulars' with soviet gear , and/or mercenaries with Israeli 'kit…with a mix and match of whatever heavy weapons/vehicles I want.
….too easy !

I did something similar in 20mm. You could add some figures in green with peaked caps as Cuban "Advisors". Also all of the countries you mentioned above tend to have elite units in Berets who often wore camo.

Oh yes, elite units in camo and extreme coloured berets plus some 'foreign advisors' are a must.

Thanks everyone. I've got a group of Rebel minis inurgents (masked) for irregulars, and I do have some African regulars with berets I could always use as the elites in camo, that's a great idea.

I've just been taking part in a discussion on another forum were it was mentioned that the Battlefront Egyptians have very few LMGS, two per platoon, and no RPGs. Unless you can source these from elsewhere its going to severely limit their potential as a 3rd World Op For.

Thanks Fatman, that is a good point on the RPGs. Thankfully I've got a lot of Rebel Minis insurgents with RPGs already so I'm probably good there.

I pulled the trigger before the sale ran out, so I've got a bunch of AK-armed regular infantry, some HMGs, AA&AT guns and T-55s on their way. Before they arrive I'm going to get myself in gear to finish basing and sorting out my other modern models on FoW bases!
