I started painting my first unit from Pendraken's League of Augsburg (LOA) range: Oxford's Blues. I want to game Sedgemoor, Killiekrankie and maybe a portion of the Boyne. What rules are out there for this? I'm not a big DBx fan, Black Powder seems to vanilla. I know of Beneath the Lilly Banners (or is it Under the Lilly Banners?) and own them but they seem for a bigger game. I enjoy Maurice but I don't think it really translates to the late 17th century. I prefer easy to learn/play rules I can finish in 2-3 hours. Any thoughts? |

You might like Ga Pa. It has lots of period feel and has smooth mechanics once you go through a little learning. Casualties are handled by roster, not figure or element removal and it handles solo play well, which may or may not be important to you. |

Twilight of the sun king? Its not my period but I hear they give a good game with plenty room for house rules. |

Have you thought of using Renaissance-era rule sets such as FoG:R? Same troop types/tactics/quality as the small armies running around the three kingdoms in the late ECW. |

Twilight of the SunKing is a good set of rules for this period, but really for full battles, as the "unit" is effectively a brigade of 1000 or so cavalry/ 2000 or so infantry. It is one of my favourite rule sets and one of our members has " tweaked it" to produce different versions to reflect the slightly different tactics of LoA/ WSS/GNW. They would certainly match OP's requirement for easy to learn rules. Depending on number of units you could finish a game within 3 hours (we usually have around 4 hours at our disposal and have used the rules to fight Blenheim and Ramillies to a conclusion- not a satisfactory one if you were playing British!) Don't really know what to suggest for smaller scale battles, although I have read good reports of " Beneath the Lily Banners". OP's choice of figures is a good one- I think this is a great range from Pendraken, especially the cavalry. |

We use BLB for the Nine Years War / League of Augsburg. Very satisfying end period catching. |
