As well as I know this battle, I was under no illusions as to the difficulty facing the French.
Opened action at 11. I advanced with Durettes and Marcognets divisions upon the allied left. Same time grand battery of just I Corps 5 batteries formed for movement to "grand battery ridge" next hour

I split and screened La Haye and Papelotte, routing the two D/B battalions forward of the slope. I accompanied this infantry with Jacquinot's entire division, and Delorts cuirassiers

Hannoverian militia fought very well, not breaking at first, but being pushed back hour by hour. Marbot's 7 hussars took honors of the day however. In four separate charges, they bagged and broke SIX of the british/KGL cav regiments on that flank. Three of them from one charge from a flank position.

The grand battery moved into position at 12:00, and disproving the theory of counter battery fire being unproductive, promptly lost 2.5 batteries, including the 12 lbs battery over the next two hours from british artillery. Once established, they did remove one Brit battery and all but obliterated one battalion exposed just south of elm tree.

At 2:00 grand battery relocated to the junction of the road forming main allied position and that from smohain. Perp on hers division broke, as well as Best's brigade of hannoverian landwehr.

Waiters cuirassiers meantime had moved up to base of allied ridge between this action and crossroads, as well as donzelots division

At 3:00 guard light cavalry division advanced in support of the guard grenadier and chasseurs division, with All the guard foot artillery

Also at 3:00 kellermans corps moved to the extreme west of the field threatening british right, while Reille advanced to maintain line between Kellerman and THE Guard. La Haye Sainte and Hougomont being bypassed and isolated.

Wellington called off action at 5:00 and called it quits

Would love to share pics of my project, but they're on my phone, not online. Shoot me an email if you're curious. Jshelton22@att.net

Was tons of fun, but would have liked to keep fighting!

John, thanks for the AAR. Fun game.

We played Waterloo with Empire V, focusing just on LaHaye Sainte, but NOT using an historical OOB.

Dutch-Belgium militia did quite well in a see-saw battle. Playing the allies, I tried to use terrain and maneuver to minimize the dominance of French Old Guard 12# artillery…losing 120 casualties to each gun every time they fired at my battalions in line in open terrain…ouch!

Good write up. Thanks!

I played this battle using Empire V rules and Clash of Arms wargame map and counters many years ago. Best simulation I have ever played.

We recently played the battle from historical OOBs and starting positions. The French did not make the same mistakes historically and managed to get infantry and the guard between the allied left flank and the approaching Prussians and the allies called an end to it all.

Was a good weekend for all 8 players.

Yes Condotta, we love our guard 12 pounders! Wish u could see the pics. We used historical OOB's and historical deployments. It was a blast

We had a 13 player game over a Friday night to Sunday time frame. We did not intentially use historic deployments and had a variable table for the Prussian arrival.

Oldmoustache, 21eRegt: Thanks for the play by play and the photos. Glad the games worked out well and only wish I could have participated in any of one of them. John Miller
