Seriously, the offset, overlapping blades approach isn't that much different from a Chinook chopper, if you think about it. The blades really don't need to "overlap;" they could just counter-rotate and alternate like gear teeth that never touch. Chain the two (or four) props to a single engine (or two engines for a failsaife), and both space and weight are saved.

I don't know if the US Army really wants this or not (lots of stuff gets covered as "why not" research that never gets used or proves practical), but they'll sell the things as "extreme" vehicles for certain.

Do they need this to fight aliens, Parzi? :)

This is at least the third time the Army has invested their time and our money in this idea. It didn't work out the last two times and I suspect this time will be no different.

I don't mind them testing the concept as long as no major output of resources are committed. Just don't develop the concept and then then start looking for some place to stick it. This is where the runaway budget programs get started.

ummm…noise level??? kinda loud for recon.

You can do some funny things with speakers to reduce the noise level, but it is an issue.

it's why I prefer hybrid motorcycles for recon troops, if not motorized mountain bikes.

GETTING CLSE TO TRAVELLER FLYCYCLES!

I think I'd rather run/walk/crawl…

Flying fast and low enough to avoid being a clay for ADA or being picked off by anyone with an automatic weapon, seems like a recipe for ending up wrapped around a tree, embedded in hedge, or spread across the wall of a building – unless you build in one heck of a sophisticated fly-by-wire system, in which case why bother with the human?
