When I was a kid (@ 40 years ago) my local library had a Civil War book with some great painted battlefield maps of the major battles, showing the areas of fighting, with small number at each area and footnote explaining the events in that area,as well as seeing formations of soldiers, even down to small individual soldiers!

Cannot recall book title,so wondering if anyone may know what book I am asking about.

Thx,
Mark

I believe the book is:
Golden Book of The Civil War American Heritage 1961
introduction by Bruce Catton

hope this is the one foe it does have what you were talking about.

Probably more than one had those paintings. I have "The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War". It has the battle map paintings by David Greenspan to which I believe you are referring. I love those paintings! They were very inspiring to my young mind. I wish they were available as prints.

If I am right about it there is a Time Life book on Civil War maps that has them

I have a recent re-print that I bought a couple of years ago for the same reason – I remember them as a kid

I am traveling now but will send you the title/ISBN when I get back home

I'm with Jan – for me it was the Golden Book of the Civil War. Great color pictures of the major battles. Gunboats blasting away at Shiloh sticks in my mind.

There are three sources that I know of:
1. The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War (American Heritage Publishing: 1960) – narrative by Bruce Catton. I think this is the original source.
2. American Heritage Battle Maps of the Civil War (Council Oak Books: 1992)
3. The Civil War (Ted Press: 1996, 2009) – mainly a reworking of the 1960 American Heritage book.

As Forager noted, the maps were the work of David Greenspan.

That is the book that inspired me to wargaming!

Jan Zizka is correct, and that book launched more than a few of us into minis gaming with the effect of those maps.

An excellent book.

Those pics inspired us too, Rdfraf! As you know, our histories on this topic have always neatly aligned.

Thanks to everyone for the info--would really like to pore over those battle maps once more. Will try and get a copy.

You better hurry up and buy it before it is banned.
