How well do Warmaster-type multiple orders/command rolls type systems work for solitaire play? It would seem they should work really well, but I'd appreciate the views of those who have tried them.

Don't know, since I'm unfamiliar with Warmaster.

Same system (apparently) as is used in Black Powder, Hail Caesar, Blitzkrieg Commander, Shot Steel and Stone and so on.

Pretty much ideal, since you can make a plan but not necessarily carry it out. Works well with Charles Grant's 'Programmed Wargame Scenarios'.

I have never found a set of rules that cannot be played solo.

Biggest problem I have is my poor dice rolling ability. I have spent several games with both sides looking at each other as I fail to make command rolls. My record was 12 throws of 10, 11, or 12.

Apart from that work well

I'm with Advocate.

I've played quite a number of solo games using the Blitzkrieg/Cold War Commander activation system, and I think it works very well as you don't know how far your troops will get.

Regarding Gunnerphil's point, I usually houserule that everyone gets a 'free' activation, then roll for subsequent activations, that way you don't end up with a diorama (as opposed to a wargame) ;)

Jack

I have never found a set of rules that cannot be played solo.

Neither have I, but some sets of rules have built in mechanics that can aid interesting solo play rather than just "go round the table and play the other side".

I wonder why people think it's worth posting this sort of thing?
Warmaster etc is great solo.
