I am looking for a good book on the Campaign in France 1940. I have read the Ballentine book on the subject and while it gives a good overview, I am looking for something with more details. I am also looking for a good Boardgame on the campaign. I have visited Boardgame geek but I would like hear what TMPers are playing (or not playing) and why. Thanks! |

Strange Victory: Hitler's Conquest of France Paperback – by Prof. Ernest R. May. and the classic Avalon hill France 1940 for a board game. |

I think Blitzkrieg in the West Then and Now by Jean Paul Pallud is my favorite: link A little pricy, but tons of photos, maps, detailed text contributes much to the interests of a miniatures gamer. |

The best book I have read about France 1940 is Alistair Horne's "To Lose a Battle." The first part of the book is about the economic and political conditions of France between the two wars. It helped me to understand why some of the decisions were made. |

A second for 'To Lose a Battle' although it is a little light on maps. As for boardgames, as noted above, look no further than AHGCs 'France 1940' which includes ten alternate OOB options based on varying levels of rearmament in the 1930s including options not to build the Maginot Line. My first ever board wargame, and includes sensible rules for e.g. armoured breakthroughs and re-locating airbases. |

Both To Lose a Battle and the AHGC France 1940 are a good starting point. |

Colonel Goutard's The Battle of France 1940. No punches pulled regarding failure of the allies to prepare and quite a lot of detail about engagements. On Abebooks in the USA for 15 USD; UK for 10 GBP Horne's To Lose A Battle also gets my vote as well. |

I have To Lose a Battle on my shelf, hope to read it this summer for the 75th anniversary. I used to plan on boardgaming it with GMT's Victory in the West, but I look to smaller games more now (since I spend my money and time on miniatures more), and now Victory Point Games' No Retreat #3 (France 1940) is the contender. link |

All of the above recommendations are excellent and on my bookshelf. Start with Horne and work your way up to Pallud. Each gives its own flavor to the events! |

Karl-Heinz Frieser's "The Blitzkrieg Legend – The 1940 Campaign in the West" and Squad Leader or France 1940 would be my recommendations for board games. Rod Robertson |
