Admirals view ships from the sides. Wargamers view ships from the top.

Therefore, an easy way to distinguish two fleets is to paint them with different deck colors – light tan versus medium tan, for instance. Not historical, but practical.

If you have more than two fleets, then it gets complicated (how many shades of tan are there?).

Other alternatives are:

* placing a logo (flag) on the base
* painting the base edge or side with a unique color per fleet
* writing the fleet name on the base

What is your preference?

I've gone with a national flag/logo on the base.
When painting the ships, I really try to get the colors of the ships, including the decks right, so for me painting a stylized flag works best.
Good question.

Different deck colors, as suggested, with the first letter of the ship's name on the base.. More info on the bottom of the metal base.

If your ships are big enough (4800up) many navies of ww2 if painted properly are easy to distinguish. Names is another story.

Brits: all camouflaged with varied patterns, quite distinctive.

Italians , different black white camo, with those red and white stripes on deck

us 42-43 mostly if not all blue. Vs japs various shades of gray, drak gray.

Germans, different black and white patterns from thee Brits they are facing, who mostly have more colourful ones. Generally unmistakable.
And you can find each ship, camo if you want.

The wood on beck is a risky thing, many once war started had painted decks ( Us for ex). Beware of not painting as wood those parts that were not, a common mistake.

I like painting the edges.

@saber6

Slightly different shades of grey

I tried this with my ships but afterwards she said it wasn't exactly what she expected and never called me again

Mine are the ones on fire and sinking. My oppponents are the ones where the crew are doing tiny little celebration dances :-)

Another option is using a different water color for the bases…
