Do you do anything to prep your wooden bases before use? Do you sand them? Prime them? Check for sap? (Yes, I've seen wooden bases oozing sap before…) |

Bill Bases, varnish, undercoating and best glue seem to be most common issues. I make my own bases from MDF, cut them myself so no 2 bases are exactly the same. Sand the edges and then paint. No ooze so far after 10 years doing this. I use Wood Glue to attach the figures before adding polyfilla and then my pre-mixed terrain goo. The glue once set needs soaking for an easy removal or else use a sharp blade. BTW have yet to find a super glue that is super on anything but my fingers!!!! Garry |

I use 1/8" plywood bases cut by a friend of mine on a laser cutter. No sanding, painting, prepping needed. Just glue the figure on and do up the base material. |

Yes I cut to size, bevel with a wood rasp or file, finish with sanding block, brush excess sawdust off, sometimes clean with a wet rag. For larger bases I've learned it helps to seal although with basswood and hardboard that is still not 100% certain that it won't warp from glue etc on top. I variously use gloss varnish or craft paint or spray primer or gesso to seal. Yes I prime, unless primer or gesso was the sealer. I don't use wood stock that has sap so no experience with that. Or are you asking about pre-cut bases? No experience with those but I would start with the manufacturer instructions and only add extra steps if there was bad results (e.g. warping). |

A few years ago, I had some Litko bases which had some sap problems. Maybe it was the humidity? Priming the edges solved the problem. Never had any "sappy" bases since, but I keep priming just in case… |

I prime both sides & the edges with spray primer – keeps thinner bases from warping in my experience |
