Looking for US, British, German and WarPact TO&E's for early 70's (72-75) time range. I've found a few threads but they deal with the 80's |

US would be ROAD (H series), 5 tank Platoons, 17 tank companies, 3 plus Combat Support. Much would be M113, with 3 companies plus Combat Support |

IIRC, West German tanks (M48s and Leopards) and mech infantry platoons are organized the same, with 5 vehicles per platoon, and 2 in the HQ, for a total of 17 in a company. Soviet/Warpac are 3 vehicles per platoon, and one as an HQ, so 10 per company. This applies to their tank and mech inf units. In some cases (many), they had four tanks per platoon (13 per company) in the tank companies, but I'm unclear as to when that started – some seem to indicate all the way back with the T-54/T-55 units, while others indicate 10 per company, and 4 (or even occasionally 5) companies per battalion), so 31, 41, or 51 tanks per battalion, respectively, IIRC. I'll leave the British to others, more knowledgeable on their TO&Es. |

The threat folks said you could tell if a Soviet tank battalion was part of an MRR or a TR by the number of tanks. MRR had 13 tanks per company with three platoons of four tanks + plus one for the HQ, while the TR had 10 tanks per company with three platoons of three + one in the HQ. Typically there were three companies per battalion. |

link Enola Games, Worlds Major Armies, 1981 has very detailed US Army, USMC and Soviet TO&E information with alternates for Vietnam War and National Guard. They also have reasonable overviews for most NATO and WarPac armies too. It's a great book. The US information provides information down to the individual soldier. Thanks for all the info. I didn't realize the W.Germans used the same to&e as we did. I was in when Division 86 was rolled out. I was in a CSC company for like 45 days before it folded in to HHC |

They started changing their TO&Es in the mid-late 1970s, and again in the 1980s. Platoon and company units got progressively smaller, with time, e.g. to 4 vehicles per platoon, then as few as 3 in tank platoons (just briefly), but changed back to 4 tanks, later. Heeresstruktur 3 – officially from 1970 – 1981 (1970 – 1979 is also mentioned – not sure what the exact dates are), though. I'm not 100% sure on this, but it appears that some TO&Es didn't get changed until about 1975 or 1976 (I could be wrong about this, so look forward to the input from others on the issue). Heeresstruktur 4 – from 1981/1982 – 1991. Presumably, the Heer Bundeswehr Wiki info is correct, so it's worth a look: link |
