What are the latest rumors concerning Warhammer 9th Edition?

Swastakowey18 Jun 2015 10:11 p.m. PST

Last I heard it will no longer be called Warhammer Fantasy Battle but Warhammer Age of Sigmar. No 9th edition but instead a reboot following the end times.

It is unclear fully what the factions are going to be or if it will be skirmish or a mix of the two, but it is apparently in for a major overhaul. A lot of rumors being thrown around with a lot of rumors saying they are wrong

At the moment only one thing is clear, that this is going to be a big overhaul as all the warhammer books have been pulled off the shelves apparently.

Mithmee18 Jun 2015 10:54 p.m. PST

Yup, GW is going to make everyone buy new Army Books at a far greater prices.

Black Cavalier18 Jun 2015 10:55 p.m. PST

A few months ago, the Bell of Lost Souls web site message boards had an extensive review of the rumors. You might be able to use google to find it sgain.

Intrepide18 Jun 2015 11:27 p.m. PST

A Hail Sigmar pass. I think chaos will prevail.

Brian Smaller18 Jun 2015 11:37 p.m. PST

Too bad – I am still going to paint Bretonnians and use them with earlier editions of the rules.

doug redshirt18 Jun 2015 11:44 p.m. PST

Anyone remember when you wrote rules and then 10 or so years later you sent out a single page of corrections and some optional rules? I miss those days.

Lt Col Pedant19 Jun 2015 2:02 a.m. PST

"…this is going to be a big overhaul…"

If you can pre-order the latest version from 4th July, let's hope the 'big overhaul' is more or less complete by now.

Mako1119 Jun 2015 2:07 a.m. PST

I'm holding out until the 20th Anniversary edition.

GonerGonerGoner19 Jun 2015 2:27 a.m. PST

Twentieth anniversary was 2003.

f u u f n f19 Jun 2015 4:18 a.m. PST

I have a 25th anniversary ad/poster from a 2008 issue of White Dwarf around here somewhere. It had a revamped "Harry the Hammerer" on it if I remember right.

So glad I never bought any of the Games Workshop drugs.

Kevin C19 Jun 2015 6:24 a.m. PST

I wish Games Workshop would offer earlier editions for sale. The first and third edition in particular were pretty good sets of rules. While Games Workshop has certainly "jumped the shark" more than any other company out there, I have to admit that I have never found a set of basic rules that I like better than some of the earlier versions of Warhammer. From what all of you are saying, I think that I will be sticking with the 8th edition rules. At least I can probably pick up some more 8th edition stuff really cheap for my group in July.

I was told by the Mantic Games people at ORIGINS that soon Kings of War will be the only Fantasy Mass battle game.

I was told Sunday at my FLGS that GW is buying back all the movement trays and that the new game will be round bases so you can play High Elves vs. Space Marines……

Just saying……

Intrepide19 Jun 2015 7:05 a.m. PST

Kings of War has an excellent shot at becoming the dominant mass fantasy set of rules, but it will not be the only set out there. That said, I think they will probably become the tournament and club set. Nice people who include their fans. I like Mantic rules and minis, and as for the minis, you CAN use ANY minis you like in Kings of War.

Lt Col Pedant19 Jun 2015 7:35 a.m. PST

…You CAN use ANY minis you like in Warhammer (if only in the privacy of your home).

Intrepide19 Jun 2015 9:48 a.m. PST

"(if only in the privacy of your home)"

Well, that covers pretty near everything.

There is some percentage requirement for Mantic figures to win best painted army or some such in their tournaments, but otherwise you can bring whatever. There will be a lot of GW armies made obsolete by the new rules getting a second run at life in KoW.

This move in WHFB 9th or whatever it is going to be called will be hailed as genius or become an example of "don't let this happen to you". In some ways it is a full circle back to 1st edition which was more skirmishy.

kallman19 Jun 2015 10:47 a.m. PST

Well glad I did not buy 8th and have stuck with my 6/7th edition materials. However, I agree with Kevin C that the third edition seemed to be the best version or even as far back as the second. Ever since 8th came out my Warhammer Fantasy figures have pretty much sat on the shelf or in boxes. I even considered selling off the entire lot but just could not part with what have been some of my longest owned and pretty much completely painted armies. Sadly my Dogs of War were rendered obsolete by 8th and really started being phased out by 7th edition. I doubt I can play my Chaos forces at all now with all the changes, same goes for my Lizardmen, and the 8th rules made my Bretonnians useless to bring to the battle.

I am glad that Dragon Rampant will be coming out soon as at least some of my old models might see the table top again.

Brian Smaller19 Jun 2015 12:05 p.m. PST

and the 8th rules made my Bretonnians useless to bring to the battle.

But they are so pretty laugh

Garand19 Jun 2015 12:45 p.m. PST

Some of the rumors circling around this new edition is that it was either a major overhaul or WHFB is dropped completely as a game. Period. No matter which way you look at it, WHFB is dead. This new game is going to be the replacement.

Damon.

Mako1119 Jun 2015 3:35 p.m. PST

Sorry I wasn't clear.

20th Edition of the rules, which should be along shortly, no doubt.

Schogun19 Jun 2015 5:41 p.m. PST

Sounds to me that GW is going the Warmachine/Hordes approach to gaming.

Greenfield Games19 Jun 2015 5:45 p.m. PST

People are assuming that AoS is going to be the replacement for Warhammer. GW has said this: "Age of Sigmar is not Warhammer 9th."

What they haven't said is when or if Warhammer 9th would be released so everybody assumes that Warhammer has a game is dead.

One of the things in the rumor mill right now is that the full name of Age of Sigmar is Age of Sigmar – A Warhammer Strategy Game.

To me, this says that AoS is a bridge game. A game that will serve as an entry point to the new Warhammer game. My guess is that the announcement of the coming Warhammer 9th will correspond to the release of AoS.

All of the current rumors about Age of Sigmar is that it is a more skirmish level game. Something that will let you play with a handful of miniature up to something about the size of a Saga army. Personally, I think that this is exactly what the game needs. Sadly, I also believe that GW will drop this game shortly after the release of Warhammer 9th.

Captain Oblivious19 Jun 2015 6:05 p.m. PST

I'm just glad Kings of War is out. Maybe I can finally get some other people in my area to play it with me.

Intrepide19 Jun 2015 7:01 p.m. PST

Captain Oblivious – go to their forums and sign up. A rather positive and welcoming bunch over there. manticforum.com/forum

Mantic plans to offer army lists for all of the Warhammer armies supposedly going OOP with the end of the Warhammer universe. I am not sure if these lists are going to be part of the 2nd edition rule book, or merely going to be on their website--but one of their main forum moderators has been very active on their forums working on drafts of these and soliciting input. Up to now these lists have existed somewhat, but only as unofficial fan lists.

Garand19 Jun 2015 8:48 p.m. PST

According to my FLGS owner, ONLY the warhammer books have been recalled. The figures are still to be sold in store. Rumors are that they will be supported in the new rules.

Damon.

kallman19 Jun 2015 9:46 p.m. PST

So can anyone give a quick down and dirty overview of Kings of War as a fantasy rule set? Oh and Brian yes the Britonnians are rather dashing on the table top.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine20 Jun 2015 2:05 a.m. PST

Still playing 3rd edition….

Lt Col Pedant20 Jun 2015 2:16 a.m. PST

3rd Edition: Me too. Never looked back … or forward.

Intrepide20 Jun 2015 9:56 a.m. PST

kallman, I don't want to derail this thread about GW's 9th edition WHFB or 1st edition ???, so I have tried to answer your question here: TMP link

Thanks I have responded and appreciate the follow up. My interest is piqued.
