"Can anybody speak to the historicality of quiver on back vs quiver on hip?"

If you look at any mediaeval illustration of a horse-archer – Turk, Mongol, whoever – his quiver will be hanging from a waistbelt at his hip, balancing the bow-case on the other hip. On the back is just about unheard of – I think there's one Siberian rock-drawing that might be a Hun who might have a quiver on the back.
