I have tried on Google but not sure which images would be appriopriate for mid-1980s gas station in Germany. Any one have a clue?

Not all that different from US prototypes, really. Some of them are older than the '80's but the buildings might well remain the same that long (even if the pumps were updated).

You may want to try a Google image search of the well known petrol brands:

Esso, Aral, Fina, Total, and Shell to name a few.

Search "benzine stations".

Those located along the autobahn would have better amenities than those within a city (lack of space).

Just like the U.S., but not as big a footprint. Smaller carwashes behind the gas station, where the car stays in place and the washrack moves over the car, too.

I was stationed there in the 1980s and saw a mix of old, new, and in-between types of structures. As timurilank said, the stations along the autobahn and the major highways would be more modern than the ones in the smaller towns or inner cities.

Looking at the images in a Google search of "benzine stations Germany" shows the wide range that I recall.

Various, both is size, shape and style! Often with a cafe, this place has not changed much since the 80s and has a wonderful name!

You're far better off to google the German term, "tankstelle" or the plural, "tankstellen". Also choose some random German cities. I turned up quite a lot of images by searching "tankstelle Hamburg", etc.
