My four-year-old grandson found out from our daughter that his Grandpa was in the Army and on tanks (M-60). I want to buy some 54mm WWII soldiers and tanks and other vehicles – preferably in scale, but what does it matter to a four-year-old? What's my best bet? Thanks – Hal

Also, where is the best online (or other) source for 54mm?

For a four-year-old, I'd recommend plastic little green army men.

The Toy Soldier Depot and Toys R' Us usually sells them -- along with plastic tanks; for reasonable prices.

If he takes to them, and takes care of them, you can always add to his collection as he grows older with higher-quality diecast vehicles.

Here's a site where you can buy sets ranging from about $50.00 USD to over $300.00 USD. Too bad you weren't around when Marx was making toy soldier sets. Some of them were *huge* and had *many* accessories and vehicles. My "American Patrol" set has an astonishing array of stuff. Two large armies; German and American. Howitzers, Machine guns, and a P-39, all that fire pellets! Exploding house, bunker, and mountain. Tanks and vehicles galore. Including German motorcycles with sidecars! A camouflage canopy to hide your pellet firing 88mm gun. A two piece Atlantic Wall. Trees, barbed wire, mines, tank obstacles, and much more! Very rare in mint condition though. Probably a thousand bucks on the Marx collector market.

Hal,

I've got tons of figs, tanks, and whatnot. I brought stuff to the flea market at last year's Historicon, and couldn't even give it away. Let me know what you'd like and I'll bring it with me (as a freebie--I figure I owe you lots for enjoying MWAN all those years). My email is [ bumbydad@gmail.com ].

the illustrated one is a darn good set from Toys R Us.
Got it for my grandson before a beach trip back when he was 5 i guess. he still plays with it now at 9. in addition to "beach head" play, its gotten its share along with some Lincoln logs.
