It was his first battlefield defeat, but Frederick was thumped soundly when he invaded Bohemia during the War of the Austrian Succession. There was no major battle, but Frederick was out-marched and out-thought by the Austrians under Charles of Lorraine – or we should say his chief of staff, Marshal Traun. Frederick said he'd been taken to school by Monsieur Traun. The Prussian army was routed, losing many detachments and swarms of deserters when their supply line was cut. But yes, thanks. I'd not realized these battles were fought on the same day. |
