any day that starts like this……. If you delete on one board, it vanishes on all……. Go on, have another go! Sounds a witty title |

Oops! Not having much fun here with the computer. Must get a new one soon. The post should have only been on the Media board and read as follows- Sadly, I could not make it to the Waterloo celebrations but I watched the opening ceremony on Euro News. It was a very arty event, with men walking slowly down the Lion mound pulling different coloured streamers, probably to represent the armies involved, blue for France etc. Then, with classical music playing in the background, some men rode horses doing fancy steps, and one rider and horse fell to the ground when a gun fired, which was very symbolic. However, the narration was more entertaining. Apparently, Napoleon led a battalion against the Prussians who fled the scene. LOL. But very disappointing to hear that there were no members from the French Government present, other than the Ambassador to Belgium. Anyway, looking forward to watching the coverage of the re-enactments events and possibly to more entertaining narration. Loving the month of June so far. |

Switched the Euro News channel on and they were showing the Waterloo battlefield display by Willy Smout. It looked really impressive and was obviously a labour of love for the guy who built it. But still, 150,000 euros! |

Well it's an estimate and spread out over forty years off course. Still it sounds kind a high, as most of his 1/72 figures are in plastic. But it remains a magnificent work, especially his eye for rebuilding the terrain |

Gee, when I read "Arty" I mistakenly thought that the lead was an artillery display. With all due respect it sounds more like the start to an Olympics than the commemoration of a battle. |

jowady Sorry about that. To be honest, I would have preferred an artillery display myself, perhaps representing a grand battery or something. But it was only the opening ceremony, which I guess was meant to be mainly symbolic. |

It would have been nice if they had a presentation of the colors and a Ceremony honoring those who fought there and especially those who fell to start. Maybe an address by a noted Historian, of course with all of the languages it could be difficult. |

I guess it may have been a case of civilians and governmental bodies taking over what was a military affair. And politicians are naturally touchy when it comes commemorating anything military. Might make a good topic that – what would you have done instead? |
