Middle Imperials are very much the forgotten period of the Roman army. I'd hazard that there are at least ten Late Roman armies and fifty Early Imperial Roman armies for each MIR army that makes it to the wargames table. This is a huge pity because there was a great deal of fighting in the Middle Empire (against Germans, Sassanids, Palmyrans and very frequently other Romans) and because there is a lovely 28mm range available from A&A. I've been very slowly working on a Middle Imperial Roman army for use with my "to the Strongest!" rules. Last year I was lucky enough to pick up some beautifully painted minis from David Imrie, and I've recently painted a few more minis to extend the units, and rebased.
I've written an army list for the poor forgotten MIR for "To the Strongest!", which can be downloaded from here: link Best, Simon |

Lovely. I do not mind being in the minority as Middle Imperials are the only Romans I have. The period of time is so rich with events that you have nearly an unlimited supply of scenarios. Good luck with this. Cheers, Robert |

Very nice! Agreed that there are tons of possible scenarios for this period |

Thanks chaps! I clearly forgot that I started the army back in 2011 and left it 4 years before basing the next two units. Best, Simon |

I'm working on one of these myself. I wonder if Aurelian will drive a lot of new MIR armies? I imagine a lot of people will just use other stuff for it. Oh well. |

idbi, I don't think that would work for me; some of us are more in touch with our OCD sides. ;-) I'd like to try Aurelian, too. |

First, beautiful work on those units! Second, not meaning to offend anyone's OCD, but are there enough similarities between EIR and MIR equipment that someone building an army in 6mm could use EIR and do a 'paint conversion' to MIR? I'm planning to try out Aurelian, but 28mm is not an option for a variety of reasons. I could see myself building a 6mm army, though, probably with Baccus figs… |

Just like the Middle Child it would appear the Middle Roman's are a bit of a problem. Always in the shadow of the older sibling and with a cute younger one that gets all the attention! Top basing by the way, nature abhors a vacum (I once read on a someones terrain guide)! Thanks for showing. |

P. M. There are differences in the shape of the shields and the type of armor. Aurelian was late 3rd century. By this time the shield was now a flattened oval The Lorica Segmentata was no longer in use. While Phil Barker believes their armor was leather, others go with mail. The lorica segmentata was still in use during the early to mid third century. For Baccus or Rapier 6mm use the late republicans. Paint them with pants instead of bare legs. Either file the central ridge of the shield off or hide it with painted shield patterns. For H&R use the late imperials. I have been mixing the Rapier and Baccus figures |

williamb, thanks for the advice, that's exactly the kind of info I was after! |

Great figures! I agree that A&A offers a lovely range. I just got some Middle Romans from their May sale. Excellent quality figures. With the army deals they offer and the sales they have, you can get them at a good cost. Middle Roman army is a very interesting one to build up. I agree that their time period was full of action and adventure. You can re-create some great battles and skirmishes over the Middle Roman period. I plan to get to work on my A&A figures once I have my Late Roman project done. I have to admit the Late Roman is my favorite, but Middle Roman is a close second place for me in terms of interest for history, gaming and figures. I have seen "Aurelian" mentioned on a few posts. I am familiar with the Emperor Aurelian, but is it referencing some new game for the Middle Roman period? |

I'm thinking of all those beautiful "A & A" middle Romans. I hope Simon paints up a batch or two! |

Diocletian see TMP link That sounds great. I have occasionally wondered why this period didn't draw more interest from war gamers; it sounds ripe for a campaign style game a la Dux Brittaniarum or even one of those wargame-like board games. |

Thanks for the link. Looking forward to it. Sounds like an interesting concept. Simon, your "To the Strongest" rules look interesting too. From what I read, looks like you have some features other games that cover the Ancient to Medieval period. I am going to give some thought to buying the .pdf version. Thanks for adding the Middle Roman Army list. That makes the game all the more interesting. |

Middle Romans also offer good possibilities as an allied force with Palmyrans. |
