I have another question about a piece of Russian winter gear – the Ushanka fur cap. I know the fur was gray, and I know the officers version had real fur, while the enlisted had faux fur called "fish fur". But what I haven't been able to determine is what color would he fabric portion of the cap be. Would it be the khaki-green of the uniform or the grey-brown of the overcoat? Or some other color?

Thanks,

Terry

I paint them the grey-brown of the overcoat

Here are some re-enactors – the ones in the mid page are wearing Ushankas

It is probably a bit lighter than the greatcoat, a sort of mid khaki brown. There is a lot of colour variation however (as with all Russian uniforms).

My Ushanka is charcoal grey with grey fish fur, very non regulation!

From some exhibits I have seen….

Army = typically Grey on the turned up insides (if it has fur, fake or real – sometimes it is felt) with an olive, grey or even leather "exterior" which is the part under the turned up ear flaps…

Navy = black

I also did mine in all grey (which matches the tourist versions sold now a days)… I did it because it looks cool and is reasonable.

I suspect that the grey interior with an olive exterior is probably much more typical of standard issue and I suspect many would have been grey felt lined.
