There seems to be an increasing tendency to overdo the tall grass and colourful flowers on 28mm bases. Every base treated to the same uniform appearance ruins the effect for me. It just doesn't look correct and distracts from the figure.

Please, keep it simple to make your work look better (of course others will say do what YOU want, I know).

I don't have the audacity to say as much when TMPers kindly provide pictures of their work, but it's what I think.

Agree / disagree?

I prefer the bases/basing materials to match the color/finish of the terrain mats in use.

I too eschew such fancy bases. All mine are just plain green mount board.

Everybody has an opinion. You stated yours (or obviously didn't in the past.)

I have mixture – some fancy bases and some plain ones

I must say that I do like the colourful flowers on stands for the Generals

I have both plain and fancy -- whatever I feel like doing at the time since they belong to me.

I use two colors of sand, with small ballast, as gravel. It is more than green paint on a flat base, but less than flowers, and a lot of detail… I mix the three ingredients in a bowl, paint wood glue on the base, then dunk in a bowl of the mixture, let dry, and seal with Scenic Cement: looks decent, without being over done, quick, and simple.

I went with flat bases, painted a uniform color of green, for years. Then I tried the sand technique, one color, and I liked it. After a while, I found the 2nd color of green sand, with gravel-like ballast, mixed the three, and that is my limit. To me, it improved the look of the figures, dramatically, with minimal effort. I will be stuck in this mode of basing for the next several years, without a doubt. YMMV. Cheers!

Plain black bases. They conflict with all terrain equally. I now know this is the "cheese pizza solution" – something that nobody wants but everybody can tolerate.

BTW, I really appreciate the artistry and like most "terrained" bases that I see. It's just not for me.
