I want to look at some dungeon crawl / bug hunt / Space Hulk type solo games with the following:

  • Have a random terrain generator – so a chart for rooms, corridors, or a set of tiles you shuffle. Anything that makes the terrain change up for replay. The Zombies!! board game does this with terrain tiles that you shuffle and put down (but it is not a solo game).
  • Has a random bad guys generator. Again a chart works. Or perhaps the terrain tiles contain that info.
  • Has a campaign/RPG style component where survivors get added skills or bonuses, promotions. Just something to act as a way to link the games.

Any genre or period, I'm more interested in looking at game engines than specifics.

I think the solitaire rules for Advanced Heroquest works for all that: link

Various editions of the Dungeon Master Guide for D&D have a similar system.

Check into Mythic.

It's geared for solo, or GM-less play, has a GM Emulator, RPG rules, monster creator, etc. Uses questions you come up with on the fly, and die-roll "answers" to determine the results. Also has rules for ending scenes, and plot twists too.

2 Hour Dungeon Crawl from THW would be just what you want.

This sort of has the first 2 elements you want. room/corridor tiles, random placement of chits for tools, robots, etc. (solo version), and robots can be either good, bad or neutral.

a dated game, but check the reviews in the forum section which discuss playing solo.

THW's Warrior Heros also has a credible dungeon crawl experience which may have been the genesis for THW's dungeon Crawl. Though I like elements of the Reaction system I can't get past the fact that using a d6 system does not generate much statistical variation. Rep 3's are all but useless Rep 4 marginally so and Rep 6 all but unkillable (feel free to correct me as my playests were a while ago). A d10 Rep structure would have worked much better in my opinion and am surprised such a mod does not exist I am aware of. Otherwise these products contain intriguing design mechanisms.

Legends of Araby from 2 Hour Wargames did this for Arabian Nights style adventures.

Chainsaw Warrior from GW way back in the dark ages did this.

Ganesha Games Armageddon Hour link gives a nice little sic-fi dungeon crawl that plays in one hour.

Zombicide is a brilliant single player game, more fun with friends but the mechanics are there for a solide single player game.

Warhammerquest.D&D drizzt, ashardalon and Ravenloft. Perhaps arcade version of forgotten king .
For sci fi try out gears of war

It's not out yet, but Dungeon Saga by Mantic might hit all your required points. I know Jake Thorton, the rules writer, was working on a random bad guys generator that would also be influenced by the random dungeon generator. (Check out his blog for lots and lots of designer ramblings and observations on the rules development). quirkworthy.com

There apparently is also an enemy AI system, so that you can play solo, or you and your friends play as the party of adventurers and let the AI take care of the dungeon's denizens.

There's some info on the kickstarter here:

Sounds like you're describing a Two Hour Wargames rule set.
