Saw this up on ebay, brought back some great memories. I remember ordering the set from the back of a comic book, the art was so cool and the figures were so horrid. Probably the only AWI figures around at that time 1967? auction |

I do. I believe they were a buck. The WW2 figs came in a little foot locker. How about this beauty?

Shouldn't that be "Klak-a-Jap"? That would be more in fitting with the 50s. I'll get my coat….. Yeah. I don't think you could run that ad today. And it's only for boys! Even more non PC! |

The toy was available in 1944. More insane is this ad. YouTube link |

I remember my utter and bitter disappointment when my long anticipated, checking the mailbox everyday, tormenting my mother box arrived -- I was expecting Marx type figures -- into the garbage they went and I still point to that as my first lesson with advertising and marketing. regards Russ Dunaway |

Formed the basis of my earliest gaming until I discovered Airfix. Yes we used the ACW (2 inf per stand) Marx set (had AWI too) for our very first "miniatures game". I believe the detail was somewhat better in those days, and the figures' color less "neon". Used Joseph Morschauser's "How to Play War Games in Miniature." |

Krak A Jap is from 1944. You are right about the Gung-Ho being from the 60s. |

About 5 years ago I picked up original sets of the AWI and WWII with it's cardboard footlocker. The originals which these are were very hard plastic flats. All different scales but I was crazy over the AWI as a child. The odd thing is the cannon are cast front to back with 3 canon on a stand. I will get some pictures out. I have started playing Memoir 44 in 1:72 on a 5" hex table top. I broke out the WWII set and am using the cannons and trucks not ad :) |

I remember a set of General Custer and Indians which came in a tube. They were flat plastic but lots of poses and detail. I painted them and played for hours. |

Love the Gung-Ho add. Especially how they have the fat kid fanging down a plate of beans. |

My god- so that's what they looked like. I remember the ads from the backs of American comic books and feeling cheated that I'd never be able to take avantage of the offer because I didn't have a 'Zip Code.' AND there was a footlocker as well.. |
greenknight4 | 14 Jun 2015 10:59 a.m. PST |
Yes the footlocker was a cardboard box printed to mimic a foot locker :) |

I also had about 300 ACW GIANT figures as well, they were great. |

like 42flanker,I remember seeing them in comics and wishing I knew someone in the States so they could get them and send them to me!! On seeing them now I am pretty lucky that never happened or that would have been a major disappointment, the artwork always looked brilliant too!! |
