Say a small warhead gets smuggled into Israel and is set off. What will they do in response? I know the premise is vague. But what if they suspect Iranian Origin? Nuke Tehran? Can they reach Tehran? If they can confirm origin would they target the "usual suspects"? Xin |

Massive Overkill 10-fold Retaliation Response or MO-10x-R2? And Israel will not wait til she's nuked to exercise this option. She will pre-empt the would-be aggressors first. |

Blow up the Xintau beer factory? :) Bit too many what-ifs Xin? Its not what Israel would do but what would the UN, the US and 'other' bastions of democracy do, would all bets be off or would it be toothless dogs baying again. So taking this premise, throw a dart at the world and your answer would be as murky and questionable as ever. Truth is you are also asking does Israel have the bomb? Does the Saudi family have access? So in the end your what-if becomes many what-ifs. Cheers |

In the absence of an obvious state sponsored attack, it is very hard to find sensible targets to shoot back at with WMDs. Israels supposed 'Sampson Option' is more intended for use if the country is threatened with utter destruction. No-one knows what its actual policy on the use of nuclear weapons is, however I would suggest that going 'mad dog' with all and everyone would tip us all well on the way to WW3. Just the sort of thing a lunatic religious terrorist death cult might wish to provoke through such an attack, and so the sensible reponse is not to do it. |

Probably, stupid b*****s but at least they took all my nasty neighbours out with me. Collateral damage, is it called? |

"What would Israel's reaction to being Nuked be?" Same as anyone else's, I should think. |

Mine would be to lash out at every single nation that has ever annoyed me. And that is why I am glad that I am not President. |
Attalus I | 11 Jun 2015 9:20 a.m. PST |
Such an attack on Israel would surely kill thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank due to the spread of radioactive fallout. |
Patrick Sexton | 11 Jun 2015 9:27 a.m. PST |
Attalus, It would still all be blamed on the Israelis. And the people that would do it don't give a rat's furry ass about the 'Palestinians' except as propaganda tools and possible fodder. |

If the attack is, as I would expect, perceived as an existential threat to the people of Israel, I would expect a severe response. If a clear identifiable culprit is available, expect a response that destroys a number of major cities in the offender. Absent a clearly identifiable culprit, I think you'd see a response but one delayed until a plausible culprit is identified. |

There is no "if" for a nuke attack on such a small country as Israel. No doubt, their retaliation, nuclear, or otherwise, would be swift and severe. As mentioned, many others will still blame Israel, and call for the boycott(s) to be tightened. |

Giving the size of the place, first would there be enough left to answer the question. And this kind of discussion is edgy. But "We can laugh of every thing but not with everyone". |

To get an idea of Israel's strategic military thinking, read "The Lion's Gate" by Stephen Pressfield. Whatever the response will be, it's been thoroughly planned and already in place. |
Herkybird | 11 Jun 2015 12:08 p.m. PST |
Israel, I guess, would initially struggle to deal with the casualties and infrastructural damage. The military would find out who was responsible, probably with US and other nations help… …and would respond appropriately. God forbid any such thing happen for real though! |

I suspect the Israeli nuclear arsenal is large enough to destroy every major city of every nation that is presently at war with them. I suspect if they are going to launch one nuclear weapon, they may as well launch most of them, and hit every enemy they have at one time. The only thing worst in the Middle East than a nuclear attack on Israel will be what happens afterwards. If Syria does not want to be hit with a nuclear weapon, then Syria should make sure Iran does not nuke Israel and so on. I would think Mecca and Medina would be on the target list, just because they are important cities to those who are Israel's enemies, and it's another way to hurt them. If one is guilty, everyone will be punished. Everyone who has been through boot camp knows how that works. A small country with a small population can't withstand too many nuclear weapons attacks. Military strategy does not always have many options when you are a small country surrounded by wars and enemies. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

I'm just glad this is a what if….
Who isn't ? Save for Daesh, AQ, some Persians, and possibly a few others in the region … And yes the collateral damage beyond ground zero(s?) would be horrific. Not to mention the radioactive fallout. The surrounding regions would have to make a mass Exodus. And still many would die. It would seem like Armageddon to anyone who survived initially in the fallout radius. |
