Some of you have suggested that TMP should begin producing videos, in addition to the articles we already publish. If we did videos, what kind of hobby-related videos would you most like to see? * unboxing videos * minis review videos * Hobby News videos * battle report videos * game sample videos * interviews with prominent hobbyists etc. |
John the OFM | 10 Jun 2015 9:13 p.m. PST |
Please. NO "and then I rolled a 03 when he charged me" videos. ALL Youtube battle reports are excruciatingly BORING. |
Winston Smith | 10 Jun 2015 9:43 p.m. PST |
He's holding back. He doesn't want to offend any special snowflakes who think their YouTube videos are the cat's pajamas. |

I would like to see this happen, but I almost always have issues with time lock and blank screens when I try and start a thread. Will this slow the forum down further? |

How about the long promised revised and updated version of TMP? If as good as promised running videos should not be a problem |
sneakgun | 10 Jun 2015 10:45 p.m. PST |
The videos can't be any worse than some of the threads lately. |

Unboxing, game samples/examples,interviews. |
Mako11 | 10 Jun 2015 11:17 p.m. PST |
I've seen some of the unboxing, reviews, and how-to videos on-line, and they are quite good. Not sure they need to be recreated here. Perhaps just a link, in several sections to them, based upon the categories above. The thing I think would really be useful here, since we get the same questions, over and over, is some sort of area where there is a listing of rules available for different periods (in and out of print), and where they include an overview of dice mechanics used, scale (e.g. one figure is one man, squad, platoon, etc., or where they are listed as squad, platoon, company, battalion, regiment, division-level maneuver units). That used to be up to date, but suspect that is no longer the case. |

I would have agreed with the OFM until I discovered the reports videos produced by a Youtuber called "WargamerGirl". Take a look John, you might be pleasantly surprised, and do let me know your opinion of her efforts. :O) |
Cosmic Reset | 11 Jun 2015 4:46 a.m. PST |
Sorry to be negative about people's efforts, but I've never seen a wargaming video, that I wouldn't rather have been able to see via text and still photos. I'm with OFM on this one. Don't want them, and hate to see time spent on them , that could have been spent on something useful at TMP. |
TunnelRat | 11 Jun 2015 5:02 a.m. PST |
I would watch most of the items listed in Bills post at the top, except BATREP's which, as John the OFM said, can be excrutiatinly boring. That said, Youtube has a plethora or Wargames related videos already covering almost everything already – do we need to replicate something that may already have been done? Videos would have to be hosted somewhere & that means that significantly more space would be needed on the TMP server(s) to store them. If this is a line that TMP wants to follow, then how about the TMP'er making their video, posting it on Youtube – let them worry about the overheads of server space – and then post a link within TMP??? |
ArmymenRGreat | 11 Jun 2015 5:31 a.m. PST |
I never want to stifle change and improvement, but I'm satisfied with posts that link to YouTube. So, TunnelRat +1 To answer the question, I like product and rules reviews. |

I like the How to play Videos. The good ones are so much better then reading rules and then figuring it out. Clif |

I'd be somewhat interested in unboxing videos, and certainly interested in how-to videos that explained game mechanics/turn sequence, etc…, but none of the others. |
Silent Pool | 11 Jun 2015 8:25 a.m. PST |
Ultramodern reports – then call it Fox, Sky, or BBC, or some other . Then I'll ignore it and go start a hobby and join in on the Internet and never have to see it and …hold on … TMP, it's you! |

Whatever you want to do, man. This sort of stuff is usually better left to someone who does it as their primary thing though. Good video production takes a lot of equipment |
DWilliams | 11 Jun 2015 9:22 a.m. PST |
Yes, please provide an instructional video on how to "get a good die roll, every time"!!!! |
etotheipi | 11 Jun 2015 9:25 a.m. PST |
Good video production takes a lot of equipment And time and skill. SWMBO was a theater major (techie, not actress), and she said to get "B" level work you needed about 8-10 times as much footage as you wanted in your finished product. YMMV, but good single run throughs are a rare and precious gem. So which videos ..? * Lectures on non-parametric statistical analysis techniques * Time lapse painting technique vids * Mini wargaming shots dubbed with war movie tracks * Time lapse effect of sequential beers on gaming vids * Snips of anybody here who thinks they can dance * Terrain stuff like the Kamloopian * More cat videos, the Interwebs needs more cat videos |

Sorry, but the Dulles Wargamers 54mm WWII videos are nicely done. Being a 54mm fan boy I love em! They are quite impressive. Sparked my interest in this scale of gaming. The Altar of Freedom gents also do a pretty nice job on their videos. The 1st one on Gettysburg is really interesting. Thanks, John |
Mako11 | 11 Jun 2015 10:44 a.m. PST |
Time lapse battles with a bit of narrative might be interesting. Could go with a fast-moving slideshow, instead of a video, if desired. That might be interesting, in some cases, if well-done – queue in the background battle noises, and music too, in order to really take it over the top. I seem to recall a plastic army men posting like this, a few years back, which was quite entertaining. |

If TMP'er's (?) produce their own videos, I'm willing to make my own decision on whose are worth watching, another case of the "market will out." But expecting The Dear Leader to produce videos FOR us seems inherently loopy. I, too, would rather see him continue working on the mythical "TMP 4.0" and other projects for the running/betterment of the existing service. SO, if The Dear Leader were to instruct one of his co-editors to maintain a listing of YouTube or other links to existing and new hobby related videos such that I could click on it when signing in for the day, see what's new, and visit one or more if I'm interested, I say "Do it!" Otherwise, I like the original list at top of the thread, and I would still include game videos. The good ones will raise the bar for the others, and the "Ed Woods" of the hobby will provide more laughs for the rest of us. TVAG |

What I could see is an option for advertisers to showcase new figures and whatnot. That'd be kind of cool. |
JezEger | 11 Jun 2015 2:09 p.m. PST |
Considering that the workbench and showcase sections are rarely updated, why add something else? As has been said, plenty of talented people already doing this on youtube, which has a far larger reach than TMP. The smart money would post on youtube, then add a link from here to catch any non youtube users. |
DS6151 | 11 Jun 2015 3:23 p.m. PST |
No. It's a waste of time, effort, and resources. There are already places that do those things, and since that's what they do, they do it better. TMP should focus on what it does better, not spread out to the point where it does nothing well. |

How to make a video video? |
whitphoto | 11 Jun 2015 8:43 p.m. PST |
As someone who actually has a degree in TV/Video production and works as a pro photographer, if I had to buy everything from scratch I could start producing good gaming related videos for under $3,000 USD, quite possibly under $1,000 USD if I already had a modern computer. It takes a lot less than you think and frankly if half of these guys doing inbox inc videos just learned how to use the cheap cameras they have they could improve their videos greatly. I could bang out a couple of unboxing videos a day once I worked out a system and had a dedicated space to shoot. Hell, if bill wants to send me some free product I could do it, I'm up in the Capital Region all the time, he wouldn't even have to ship it! |

WHAT IS UNBOXING????? Winston asked a simple question, and was blithely ignored. |

But expecting The Dear Leader to produce videos FOR us seems inherently loopy. I, too, would rather see him continue working on the mythical "TMP 4.0" and other projects for the running/betterment of the existing service. We've tried some video projects in the past few years, but nothing ever turned out right. At the moment, I would expect TMP 4.0 to come first, any hypothetical videos after that. On the other hand, if staff members have free time… |
Editor in Chief Bill | 11 Jun 2015 9:03 p.m. PST |
WHAT IS UNBOXING????? A video where you open a gaming boxed set or boxed game, and show what is in the box. |
John Leahy | 12 Jun 2015 11:10 a.m. PST |
What is this TMP 4.0 of which you speak? I have heard legends of some such thing. Of course, I thought it was only a story told to wide eyed gamers at bedtime. |

What about claymation death matches between members? Whenever two TMPer's get into a tif on the boards, take it to the TMP Deathmatch! It'll inspire more polls as members vote on whom they want to go up against whom… |
