Had a nice, violent game simulating Seelow Heights on a battalion/company level:

It would be really interesting to run that scenario with a couple of different rulesets to see how it pans out. The Soviet assault is a shock wave, but there are some respectable units on the German side – what rules did you use for this game (FOW?)

BlackKnight10 Jun 2015 10:20 a.m. PST

Yes FOW.

it would be really really interesting to run that scenario with a different rules set to avoid that rediculas hub to hub tank cluster…

BlackKnight10 Jun 2015 1:44 p.m. PST

I don't think the rules set is to blame, the tanks were never hub to hub, and I'd like to see you attain your mythical spacing with the same scale models on a 6x4 table in the same numbers.

VonBurge10 Jun 2015 2:48 p.m. PST

I agree with you BlackNight.

If you had the same table, same number of models, and the size models using Battlegroup or some other rules that puts a Soviet Battalion's worth of 1/100 models on that 4' x 6' table attacking from the narrow edge, it would look about the same.

If the OP had used FoW rules with say 6mm or maybe even 10mm models then it might look just fine, so it can't be the rules alone. And some so do use smaller scales with FoW. Or you can try to get a bigger table.

The only way changing rules used would help that situation would be going with a rules set like Combat Command, where one model = one platoon rather than one single tank. In my opinion that would actually be a more doctrinally proper model to real vehicle level ratio for a "Battalion Level" game, but some folks just don't seem to like playing with that kind of unit representation ratio. I don't blame them for that.

So if you want 15mm models on that size board for that mission, one has to choose to accept the idea of one model = a full platoon of real tanks, which some folks don't like, or having a visually crowed board, which some folks don't like. Thus it just ends up as a personal preference.

I did enjoy the battle report!

Sorry BlackKnight – just read it again and it said FOW, I must have missed that.

I quite fancy running that with my home brew rules. I have not done anything tank wise on that scale before, so would have to rely on a lot of proxies …. but since there will only me looking – who cares :-)

What is a "Motostrelkovy Kompania w/ MGs"

HidaSeku11 Jun 2015 8:28 p.m. PST

BlackKnight, that was a very inspiring battle report!

I enjoyed the layout and the whole time I was reading it drew me in, wondering if the Soviets would be able to break through or if the Germans would hold the line. I think the whole battle is visually stunning and I enjoyed seeing it very much.

Good work!

normsmith-I went and edited so you were not imagining things. It is a motorized infantry company.

Hida-Thanks very much!!

It's only a matter of preference, but that's a few too many tanks for me. I play FOW but if I'm running a tank company I keep the platoons closer to a minimum number of tanks so that you end up with about a dozen. A). It's cheaper. B). It avoids traffic jams with so many AFVs heading for one objective.

Nice AAR though. I post AARs myself & don't want my criticism to put you off posting anything else. After all, plenty of people love your AAR & it's all about sharing our hard work with fellow gamers! Nice job!

well, blackknight, i would have not pack 3 pounds of meat in a 2 pound bag. mean to say, tanks don't operate like this. if you don't see that this spacing looks goofy, well, i'm sorry.
i would have played on a bigger board or cut the forces involved.
see, i can be a smart a ss, too!

It looks like you started out that way on this thread.
