Would you say that wargamers are mostly optimists? |
Royal Liz | 09 Jun 2015 1:36 p.m. PST |
I would say that I am, but reading some of the comments I'd say not overall. Like some of what they say about the companies. |
Old Contemptibles | 09 Jun 2015 1:37 p.m. PST |
I don't think wargamers are any different than the rest of the population as a whole. Some are, some aren't. |

There is nothing about wargaming that makes us more or less optimistic than the great unwashed masses. |
Ragbones | 09 Jun 2015 1:50 p.m. PST |
Sure we are. We buy these great big mounds of figures and terrain and honestly believe we'll get around to painting and using them all. Although, personally, I maintain a permanent pile of unpainted lead to ward off the Grim Reaper. |
Yesthatphil | 09 Jun 2015 1:54 p.m. PST |
Well I'll say 'yes' then – purely on the basis that the wargamers I know and the pessimists I know are, more or less, different groups. Science, you see … Phil |
Legbiter | 09 Jun 2015 1:56 p.m. PST |
OF COURSE, dear Brother. Why, is because (a) mostly we are Conservatives, a notoriously-optimistic type of humankind, and (b) we actually imagine we will LIVE to paint that tottering mountain of lead which would Haunt the Dreams of more realistic folk. |
Rhysius Cambrensis | 09 Jun 2015 2:02 p.m. PST |
No, why even ask that question? It's never going to achieve anything. Anyway, my drink is now half empty… ;-) |
etotheipi | 09 Jun 2015 2:03 p.m. PST |
Optimist here. My glass has 100% reserve capacity. |
War Panda | 09 Jun 2015 2:04 p.m. PST |
I will optimistically say yes! |
sillypoint | 09 Jun 2015 2:21 p.m. PST |
Depends, we expect to one day, finish all the projects we have purchased figures for or started to research. So we are optimist. I'm playng Napoleonics, and I'm about to make several morale rolls to save my army, I'm a pessimist 😊 |
Legbiter | 09 Jun 2015 2:36 p.m. PST |
+1 others, but disturbed I couldn't edit my post to appear less shouty. |
War Panda | 09 Jun 2015 3:10 p.m. PST |
@Legbiter For what its worth I really liked your original message. I thought it was quite humorous and not "shouty" IMO |

Well I keep buying figures that I think I will paint and play with, but they usually sit on the shelf. Whether painted or not. So yes from me. |

I'm not an optimist. Whenever things are going really well, I expect to have the rug pulled out from under me eventually. Granted, my experiences really tend to play out that way. |
Rod I Robertson | 10 Jun 2015 4:42 a.m. PST |
I was a glass-half-full sort of a chap until life broke my glass! I am positive about many things like never finishing all the painting I've got to do before I shuffle off this mortal world. I am optimistic that the darker side of human nature will prevail to bring this hobby many more conflicts to game in willful ignorance of the human suffering that complements such clashes. So, yes I am inclined to think optimistically about how pessimism shall triumph. Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

I agree with Ragbones, my lead pile says I'm an optimist and should be living healthier. |
Saber6 | 10 Jun 2015 8:45 a.m. PST |
"I'm going to get all this painted" yeah, I think so |

Absolutely!! Think of it, we buy massive amounts of figures and yet believe we really REALLY will get all painted. So much so that we go out and buy more figures! Then, more often or not we roll crappy dice and lose…yet can't wait to play again and this time I will win! |
steamingdave47 | 10 Jun 2015 12:16 p.m. PST |
We obviously think we will live for ever, given the mass of unpainted lead that " will be finished before I die" which many if us accumulate. |
Doctor X | 10 Jun 2015 11:19 p.m. PST |
Optimistically speaking, yes. |
Gennorm | 11 Jun 2015 3:49 a.m. PST |
Even if we're not I'm sure we will be soon. |
Parzival | 11 Jun 2015 12:28 p.m. PST |
I begin every battle confident that I can win it, despite all prior evidence to the contrary. Whether that makes me an optimist or delusional I shall leave to the judgment of the community. |
warhawkwind | 11 Jun 2015 1:23 p.m. PST |
Well, I just assume every saving throw I ever make will be a miserable fail. That way if it is, I'm not surprised, and if its good, I can be happy I dodged a bullet. (literally) Remember: A pessimist is never disappointed. :-) |
