My Soviets are all Vets now. I've been playing them for years, since the first FOW Stalingrad book. I do field some inexperienced occasionally but as they fill in for decimated squads they become Vets. I figured that they earned it. |

No, but I've been known to demote my dice. |

My troops never live long enough to get promoted… |

there are times I run a series of linked games and the morale results carry-over from game to game to game. Not, strictly speaking, 'promotion' per se, but certainly a status change. Of course, could be 'demotion' as well…. |

No, but I know of someone who would execute his commanders for failing by snipping off their heads. |

We did in the Charlie Company campaigns we ran. |

Not in 15mm, but I have given awards and promotions in 28mm. |

We've run campaigns before where units morale and effectiveness could move up, or down due to battle results. Also have designed scenarios that used ratings different that the rule's suggestions. |

In my Imaginination games, most certainly. |

I've painted a few kill rings on the barrels of my tanks, as they have been earned. |

My tanks have kill rings earned over a particular battle or campaign. If they subsequently do better I'll add more to fit. Obviously I don't take them away when they fail, that would be cruel and bad for imaginary morale. |

Yes, all the THW games have an easy way to have your figures get promoted or demoted based on performance. |

Nope. I play Soviet infantry with all the finesse of a sledgehammer. Most don't live long enough to fire their rifles, let alone a whole match. |

I liked the way Squad Leader allowed for the promotion of leaders to higher ranks (and skill levels) as games progressed. But in reality, units get recycled so frequently & the gaps filled with fresh blood that I think it's be difficult to upgrade a whole unit to Veteran status. If you upgrade your units, shouldn't the opposing units get upgraded as well? It seems you'd end up playing later games with full Veteran forces (unless one happened to get decimated along the way, in which case that force would be downgraded to Conscript and you end up with a mismatch from here on out). |
