I've seen plenty of really nice mats for outer space battles with X-Wings, I've seen quite a few for wrecked city scapes, but I've not seen any that have a nice, generic starship lay out. What I imagine is a surface with a variety of colored areas like a mixture of Doom and Space Crusade. I could then put my various scenic odds and ends on there to fight my battles, rather than the bits of mismatched card I have to use presently. The cool thing about such a playing surface is the adaptablity of it. I could have lots of walls and its a 'corridor battle' or less and its a space port. Any suggestions? |

I would think "puxxle piece" style interlocking cards would make a lot more sense as you could then change up the layout. A mat has a fixed layout and you may get bored of the same game time after time. If the pieces were geomorphic you could just mix them up and reassemble and have a new game each time. I bet one of the MDF cutters could put something like that together pretty easily…. |

Second idea that might be easier for you: buy a Finger & Toe downloadable set and glue to something more sturdy – MDF or foam? |

There are a number of PDF sets of spaceship interiors, both pure 2D, mixed 2/3D (e.g. doors are 3D) and 3D. Wargame Vault is a good place to start, plus wherever Worldworks is nowadays. |

Thanks guys, I guess some of the downloadable stuff would be good if I were to mount and laminate it. |

Don't laminate it! It will then be very slick and slide all over the place. Print it on card stock, and mount it on something that will have some grip. Foamie sheets are cheap and readily available. Use a matte spray fixative to protect the ink and keep a nice matte finish. |

Took me a while to remember where and what I'd seen, but you might like to try Warsmith's Warboard. It's a fold-out two-sided battle mat made from 2mm card, that comes in it's own carry case. Wayland Games carries them in the UK and the one I was thinking of is Cityspace 3/Corridors 1, which has an urban cityscape on one side and what appears to be spaceship corridors on the other side. Apparently folds up to the size of a rulebook (not sure what size they mean), but folds out to create a playing area 2' by 3' (61cm x 91.5cm)(although the detail on Waylands site reads 2" by 3", which would be rather small). They ran a Kickstarter back in 2013(?) and do several different designs. Looks like individual boards can be combined to make a bigger playing area. Might be worth a look? |

Thanks, Carrion Crow, I'll see what Wayland Games have. |
