Does the miniature wargaming hobby require great discipline from its participants?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut06 Jun 2015 8:56 p.m. PST

No, it doesn't. No more so than living as a part of society at large in the free world.

Cyrus the Great06 Jun 2015 9:00 p.m. PST

No, why would it?

McWong7306 Jun 2015 9:34 p.m. PST

It does for painting!

sillypoint07 Jun 2015 2:06 a.m. PST

Yes but since it's mostly for fun it's not a high priority.

zippyfusenet07 Jun 2015 4:17 a.m. PST

Pffffffftttttttttbwahahahahaha.

Discipline. It's a hobby. They're toys.

You need discipline only if you want to actually finish a project. And where's the fun in that?

SQUIRREL!

Discipline is:

Sir!
Self Reliance,
Respect For Authority
and
The Instant Willingness To Obey Orders!
Sir!

Oh, sorry, just a flash back to training.

?

Texas Jack07 Jun 2015 5:29 a.m. PST

Of course it does. You canīt leave half painted figures on your work table next to other half painted figures from a different project, and you certainly canīt flit from project to project and back again with no rhyme nor reason. Oh, wait. huh?

Rrobbyrobot07 Jun 2015 7:10 a.m. PST

Discipline? Haven't noticed much of that around here. But that's ok by me…
The imposition of discipline is what the Dawghouse is for, aint it? If not, what's Mistress Matilda doing there?

Paint it Pink07 Jun 2015 7:44 a.m. PST

I don't know about discipline, but it certainly requires focus, interest and commitment.

Silent Pool07 Jun 2015 7:59 a.m. PST

It's better to be objective rather than objectionable.

Nobody said it was easy.

RavenscraftCybernetics07 Jun 2015 8:18 a.m. PST

Mistress Kiera will show you the meaning of discipline!

Martin Rapier07 Jun 2015 10:54 a.m. PST

No. It is a hobby, it doesn't require anything except a vague interest.

Some people may wish to be disciplined in their approach to it, which is quite a different thing. I wouldn't wish to inflict my control freakery on anyone.

CeruLucifus07 Jun 2015 3:26 p.m. PST

No, this is just a hobby.

Some do approach our hobby in a disciplined way. I am in awe of some of their results, which I guess means I do not have their level of discipline, but possibly aspire to it.

Weasel07 Jun 2015 7:49 p.m. PST

If we were all disciplined about our purchases, the poor mini's sculptors would go out of business :)

I studied for many years under Master Card. I have learned much from his teachings.

I think we need to know what is meant by "discipline" in this context.

This is not the military. I do not have to do anything. Who is going to make me?

Yes there is a certain amount of SELF discipline required.

Discipline is what you need, to make yourself do something you don't want to do. Sounds too much like work.

If you require discipline to paint figures, read rules and show up to games, then may I suggest you find another hobby. This is suppose to be fun!

Rudysnelson07 Nov 2015 3:27 a.m. PST

Yes, there are many areas which require good discipline to get good at in gaming. Though some folks may call it focus, it really is discipline.
Research on armies and uniforms need it to produce realistic units.
Painting takes real discipline to get good at it.
Making of terrain is a leaning curve to be able to make it.
Reading, understanding and being able to apply the rules correctly and to your best advantage takes time and energy.
