I read these forums, a lot. They are informative, helpful and genuinely a fun read. However, lately I've noticed a lot of people here feel the need to post hateful, snarky and down right Bleeped texty comments.

Why?

Is it simply the world is full of hateful bitter people? I mean, I can understand if this forum was of a political nature, or covered some deep social issues, but….it's not. This is a gaming forum.

Why all the hate?

Chokidar03 Jun 2015 11:21 a.m. PST

Agreed entirely… I have given up posting most of the time.. or supporting.. and often reading for exactly that reason.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut03 Jun 2015 11:27 a.m. PST

Haters gonna hate. I find I have no reason to continue reading anything that bothers me. If no one feeds a troll, eventually it will starve and wander elsewhere for sustenance (just to be totally clear, I am not calling anyone a troll, just referring to trolldom in general.)

There is a lot of great content on this site, and a few bad apples whi can be easily skipped. In this respect, TMP refkects real life; I find the sanw dynamic at the office ir while shopping.

Hakuna matata!

Choctaw03 Jun 2015 11:29 a.m. PST

Because there are sad little people out there who feel superior when attacking others through the safety of the internet.

shadow king03 Jun 2015 11:34 a.m. PST

I have had far too many pms and comments that i found to be downright unreasonable and will not post here any of my blog or AArs i enjoy the reads but as for commenting I wont I dont come to be judged on any thing but my love of the hobby and find this wonderful place has become an exam board or people who think there better and actually do nothing anyways.

And your spot on people who think there superior is a the best example

Pizzagrenadier03 Jun 2015 11:48 a.m. PST

For me, TMP has become mostly Tango postings and discussions about TMP itself and less discussion of gaming. For me, a glance down the front page most days shows lots of Tango posts and where a discussion gets more than half a dozen responses into multi page discussion it is usually about some bizarre TMP/Frothers/who hates who/who left or returned trainwreck drama. It seems to me that this is by Bill's design or desire it be this way.

Other than that, it is what it is. I care just enough to post that I don't much care what happens here at this point.

*shrug

Just my own observation.

freewargamesrules03 Jun 2015 11:48 a.m. PST

I agree that's why I don't visit so much anymore not a pleasant place to visit and less wargames stuff discussed. There are better places for good information and friendlier too.

ironicon03 Jun 2015 12:01 p.m. PST

I just became a supporting member. There are a lot of good people on this site and good information.

Larry R03 Jun 2015 12:13 p.m. PST

Yeah it's easy to throw stones across the internet. 98% of people wouldn't do it face to face.

The Gray Ghost03 Jun 2015 12:14 p.m. PST

not a very pleasant place to post much anymore either

I usually stroll through then quickly duck out the back door

Ignore the bad and enjoy the good. Much like the rest of life. Still lot's of good information and supportive folks on the site.

Sundance03 Jun 2015 12:19 p.m. PST

It's cyclical. When I first started on here there were several people who posted hateful/snarky comments. Most of them went away/were thrown out. It calmed down for a while, now it's coming back – don't know whether it's old-timers posting the tripe or new, young whippersnappers.

Personal logo aegiscg47 Supporting Member of TMP03 Jun 2015 12:27 p.m. PST

I've cut my supporting membership contributions down to month by month, where by the time of renewal I'm really struggling about whether to continue on or not. However, then there's usually a good topic (the recent Pavlov grenadier discussion as an example) where you can get some good info, plus the search feature is great for finding info about flags, painting, terrain, etc.

I'm not sure if it's a product of the times, too many resources spread too thin, widely diverging interests in the hobby right now, etc., but yes, there appears to be much less discussion about gaming concepts, rules, reference, and so on. When I put Tango on ignore that really cut the number of items down on the main page and what's been left lately I give a cursory glance. Contrast that to several years ago when I would almost religiously hit TMP about every few hours and read most of the postings.

Glengarry503 Jun 2015 12:47 p.m. PST

That's the internet. I must say I haven't come across that many trolls at TMP, most people are nice and helpful. The debate over Tango seems to have waned. But there is something about the nature of the internet, it's anonymity, the filter of the machine and the need to be noticed (in popular culture we see many examples of celebrities better known and rewarded for their obnoxious outbursts than for anything useful they actually do) brings out the worst in people.

Probably the best way to reduce snarky comments is through peer pressure – drop the guy a friendly PM, suggest that what he said could be taken in the wrong way… grin

Cyrus the Great03 Jun 2015 1:00 p.m. PST

I will say this again. If you turn off TMP Talk and Ultra Moderns you can blissfully talk about all facets of gaming. If Tango has you bothered, put him on ignore. You get out of this website what you put into it. If you post, they will come!

Is it simply the world is full of hateful bitter people?

Yes, it is.

nazrat03 Jun 2015 1:36 p.m. PST

I was in a sour mood recently and posted something extremely snarky to one of the regular posters here on TMP. He PMed me asking me about it and I immediately apologized. He graciously accepted my apology so all is well.

It's not all hate and bile out there. Sometimes it's just a bad day.

Feet up now03 Jun 2015 1:36 p.m. PST

The few nasty evil greater demons of snarky, narky ,sarcastichaos and spite fullness have been ousted .
So we are left with many likkle nurglings and minions vying for favour to become the new greater ones.

(Phil Dutre)03 Jun 2015 1:55 p.m. PST

I try to stick to the pure wargaming boards, and try to ignore any of these bizarre in-fighting threads.

Now and then something spills over, but most of the time, it's sort of ok.

jeffreyw303 Jun 2015 2:06 p.m. PST

Cyrus' point is well taken--turning off ultramodern clears up all kinds of noise.

War Panda03 Jun 2015 2:16 p.m. PST

IMO there's still a lot of very interesting things going on here at TMP.

A minority few who try to disrupt things would hardly be noticed if the rest of us didn't reply to their posts. They would be a slight annoying spark that almost instantly extinguishes itself without the usual avalanche of condemnation coming to their help by piling on the fuel.

I also notice that these same attention seeking individuals rarely if ever make any hobby related contributions.

kallman03 Jun 2015 2:48 p.m. PST

I will echo what others have stated regarding the lack of civility. I have refrained from commenting as much as I used to. Mainly I have better things to do with my limited time and I just do not need the grief. I actually took about a four month hiatus on posting and found I did not miss TMP very much. When I decided to come back I started making judicious use of the stifle and ignore button and also editing down my areas of interest in the message boards, including the Ultramodern board. That has made my TMP experience far better for me.

TMP was the best forum for miniature gaming for a long time and still is a standard that few can achieve. Yet I have begun to explore other forums that really do seem to focus on gaming such as the Lead Adventures Forum and oddly has many of the same participants as can be found here on TMP. I have also found some pretty good social media sites on Facebook devoted to various aspects of miniature war gaming. Still TMP is an old stand by and offers much in the way of war gaming news that only a few others can compete with.

Kropotkin30303 Jun 2015 3:02 p.m. PST

This site has the best stuff on wargaming on the net. "Nuff said", as the Thing or Marvel used to say.

Tango has given me lots of good stuff, I particularly like the diorama stuff and artists who might do ultra detailed replicas of historical streets of New York he links to.

If it wasn't for him where would I see this stuff?

As to Ultramodern, I'm glad it got made into a separate board as I was losing sleep. Yes It's important to keep up Geopolitically but, Sheesh, I can't do that all the time. Ironically I wargame to get away from reality.

I rarely look at the Ultramoderns and so am blissfully unaware of snarky, hateful comments.

Slappy03 Jun 2015 5:50 p.m. PST

Mountains meet mound-hill…..

Asuide from some trollish behavior in respects to banned members and their sock puppets, all has been rather quiet.

Kevin C03 Jun 2015 8:36 p.m. PST

I am active on the Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, Fantasy, and (occasionally) the World War II forums, and I have noticed very few hateful comments. In fact, I find people in these forums to be very helpful and polite. Let's just keep painting and pushing around the lead (or plastic if that's your preference) and leave the anxiety to political bloggers and gossip columnists.

Turning off UM and selective use of Ignore and Stifle makes it a much more pleasant experience, as does ignoring all PMs (not that I get any now).

B6GOBOS04 Jun 2015 12:07 a.m. PST

Lots of very good advice.

Cyrus the Great04 Jun 2015 8:23 a.m. PST

@Terrement,
Quite the sales pitch! Martin should take advantage of your offer, before you come to your senses!

I am with you. I can't tell you how many times someone will ask for help on a topic or offer it and one or two need to point out that they spelled "Their" as "There."

Charector flaws I guess.

The vast majority of people I meet in the "real"world or on the Internet are wonderful human beings.

I hope I don't sound like a "Pollyanna" but for me this is true.

And, I won't let the very few exceptions sour me.
