So finally some players got the blues.

chubby03 Jun 2015 1:06 p.m. PST

Too much contrast. Real clothes dont look like that

Prince Alberts Revenge03 Jun 2015 6:07 p.m. PST

Very nice, enjoy the painting style! Have no problem whatsoever with the use of contrast, but my opinion, nor Chub's, really matters too much.

Bandolier03 Jun 2015 10:42 p.m. PST

Nice!
The detail really pops.

IMO they are Very nicely painted – precisely the sort of greyish-blue that many experts on the period think was a common uniform colour during the war. Considering how "difficult" blue can be to photograph accurately, you've done a good job with the pic as well.

The only "technical" criticism is that the "Blue" in the regiment's title referred to the flags, not the uniforms – certainly not in September 1643 (same with the other "coloured" regiments, it's the flags not the clothes). Some London Trained Band units stationed at Abingdon, appear to have received blue coats during the winter of 1644/45, but this seems to have been weather-related rather than an attempt to create a uniform look.

Given the number of monteros in the ranks, you could always re-assign them to the King's Army at Oxford in 1643-44.

I almost missed this one while skimming the main board. Glad I didn't. Great job of mixing in other colors to give a less uniform appearance. Next time put "ECW" in the title.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Super Max – you are right. I gather that red, blue or grey was as uniform as it got and even then Imight have overdone it. I was going to do the Orange Auxuiliaires in grey but I might muddy things up a little.Just as well really -imagine a regimentin orange! Call what Ido artistic licence but I take on board what you say.

Meanwhile heres the Brigade

Imagination not needed; the Earl of Essex regiment in the ECWS, of which I am a member, reenact in the ugliest orange of nightmare. Unkind souls call us the "Fanta regiment". Very nice and friendly bunch of people though.

Foresightpaint05 Jun 2015 2:08 a.m. PST

Tom

i checked your website. That truly is a scary orange. Did they really wear that?

Mac163805 Jun 2015 6:21 a.m. PST

Tom,

No we don't, your the "The Jaffa Cakes" to us as your very Orangey.

foresigthpaint

You have done a great job painting and basing.

They are wargames figures and we are wargamers,
We can not use "true colours" all the ECW figures will be dull blue/gray, red/brown, gray/brown lumps, before modern colour fast dyes.

As wargame figures you can not use the correct shades of blue, red, green they all look like variuse shades of black. If you keep on you would not have shading or highlighting.

PS Officers sashes in Essex's Army I think are tawny orange not red, red is for the King's Oxford Army.

Tomsurbiton05 Jun 2015 10:14 a.m. PST

Foresightpaint, our CO assured me they did; apparently there is contemporary documentary evidence of their being supplied. Mac1638,I've not heard that one. Are you in the ranks of the ungodly?

Mac163808 Jun 2015 8:30 a.m. PST

THE UNGODLY!
You call us,and you how have raised your hand against your anointed KING.

Tomsurbiton08 Jun 2015 10:37 a.m. PST

And against his Bishops, popery and his French w…e too!

Foresightpaint09 Sep 2015 8:12 a.m. PST

Too much contrast. Real clothes dont look like that

I've only just registered this post. As a result of it I smashed the figures up with a hammer because they didnt look like they were wearing real clothes.

And then I thought 'but they aren't wearing clothes. They're only little toys'. What have I done?

gunnertog09 Sep 2015 8:47 a.m. PST

Chubby

Lets see some of your figures wearing "real clothes", then we can contrast & compare.

Foresight these are nicely done.

dualer09 Sep 2015 11:55 a.m. PST

With gunnertog on this one. Come on chubby, let's see what you got.

dualer09 Sep 2015 12:43 p.m. PST

Hey Chubby, how cool is that, we both live in Scotland! I will be attending Targe in Kirriemuir and the wargames show at the Culloden Visitors Centre. We should meet up and you can bring along some painted samples of real clothing for all to see. We can take some photos so you can share your expertise with the TMP community. Please send me a PM soonest.
