So I am watching the gaiden episodes that I never saw in my original wade into the series (woohoo another 48 episodes of Legend of Galactic Heroes goodness to add to the 110 I have seen already), and it hit me that despite liking Yamng more as a character I much prefer watching stories with Reinhard in it.

So three poll questions for the us few fanboys arise

1) Who would you prefer interacting with on a social level?
a) Reinhard
b) Yang

2) Whose activities did you enjoy or enjoy watching more?
a)Reinhard
b) Yang

3) Under whose command would you rather be in battle?
a) Reinhard
b) Yang

My answers
1)b)We both like history and Yang seems an easy-person. Reinhard is intense and it would be tiring to be around him :p

2)a) Reihard is full of energy and active. Its is never boring around him

3) Too one, but I will go with b) Yang. Better chances of survival.

For the uninitiated. Lots of spoilers here so do not read if you want to see the series.

1B Same reasons…
2A Both whinge, but the blonde brat is slightly less annoying. ;->=
3 Too close; survival hard nut either way. Leaves me sitting in Phezzan, right?

Doug, I would never ever, ever trust Adrian Rubinsky with my life :P

Oi, the rest of you. If you want to sample the series we are talking about watch the 4 episode ark the Mutineer. It will give you a feel. And maybe some of you will find your new favorite series.

1. Yang
"Man has been drinking alcohol for thousands of years, it's mankind's friend. Could I abandon a friend?" That alone says Yang is a pretty laid back guy to be around.

2.Reinhard, he's just so interesting to watch. And what drives him is a noble cause even if it has the basis of a selfish reason.

3. Reinhard,
Without spoiling it too much. Survival in LoGH doesn't necessarily depends on which side you're on or who your commander is. More likely on where you are. If you're on certain commander's flagship, you're either a lucky SoB or your goose is cooked. But even the most unlikely of idiots survived LoGH under Reinhard, even after they foolishly charged right in because of some Goddess waving underwear. They on both sides still lived like men and died like men.

Manly tears are shed.

Manly tears for a manly series.

They are doing a re-imagining by the way (series based on the same novels but with a different tack at points). It could be bad, but it also could be very good (for example Yamato 2199, or the Berskerk film series, or Hellsing Ultimate). Actually most of the reimaginin g I have seen over the years were quite god compared to the original. But this series is really at the top.

Ah Bittenfeld, aka Admiral "The Goddess of Victory is waving her underwear at us". What a fun character. And some of the coolest ships in the series.

I feel cheated we never got to see a showdown between him and my favorite sociopath with rank, Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Huu, aka "This is great! Every way you turn, there's an enemy ship! We don't even have to aim! But if you shoot, you better hit!". Also a guy with a cool ship.

1) That is a hard one actually because I really do think that there is more to Reinhard than the military exploits – he is based on Frederich the Great after all, the archetypical enlightened despot who preferred flute playing and arguing semantics with Voltaire to war. It would be interesting to see the "social" side of him and who knows, one might even end up saving the galaxy: his difficulty in expressing that the non-martial/administrative aspects of his character after the death of Siegfried played a large part in him pushing his ambitions too far (and ultimately pushing himself into an early grave). That being said, Yang is one of my all time favourite characters and I could never say no to experiencing more of him. Probably in the interlude after the fall of the Alliance where he was in the early retirement he always wanted. He would be less brooding then and Frederica is there to regulate his bad habits. Ultimately I would have to say Yang but it is not a very easy decision.

2) Trick question. The series is essentially meaningless if you strip out either character's story. It is difficult to fully enjoy (or even comprehend) the genius of one without the other complimenting it. While Yang's personal struggle with his own agency in a political system that he respects but whose actions he disagrees with represents a tremendously compelling story, it just does not have the same depth without the character of Reinhard who pushes past such moral qualms and demonstrates the consequences, good and bad, of seizing power by force.

3) Even a relatively small battle in the universe involves the loss of thousands of ships and millions of men. Given the battles seem to be something along the lines of Napoleonic infantry battalions blasting at each other until one side breaks, you are going to die an awful gruesome death or survive intact and there is almost nothing you can do to influence things either way. Yang is probably the better commander to serve under because he would surrender if he thought he couldn't win and Reinhard probably would not. But that is not particularly heartening news given that Yang is still willing to sacrifice millions of men for even a small shot at carrying the day.

Excellent points!

Bittenfeld was certainly a character, it's also interesting to notice his fleet the Swartz Lancers is made up of mostly fast battleships, I don't see a line battleship any where in his ranks.
And yet Mittermeyer had mostly the line or standard battleships and was called the Gale Wolf because of his speed. Yet in the movie 'My Conquest is the Sea of Stars' Mittermeyer makes it clear he does have some fast battleships in his fleet as he deploys them to take out Yang's decoys.

I think Mittermeyer's epithet may refer partly to operational level skill. Bittenfeld is really a tactical commander. I think each fleet probably has a small number of fast-battleships, but the Swartz Lancers are the only one made up of them and cruisers.
