It's okay, Kurt Russell. Getting replaced by The Rock isn't a dishonor by any stretch of the imagination—especially after San Andreas raked in almost $115 USD million worldwide for his best opening weekend ever. Dwayne Johnson is currently in talks to star in and produce a remake of the John Carpenter classic Big Trouble in Little China, EW has confirmed. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who wrote the sleek X-Men: First Class, are attached to pen the script. The Wrap first reported the development.

Naturally, Johnson would play Jack Burton, a trucker lured into the seedy, magical underworld in San Francisco's Chinatown. The original, which starred Russell and Kim Cattrall, grossed a meek $11 USD million at the box office, but has become retroactively beloved…

This was an almost perfect movie. The special effects were mostly pretty decent and where they were bad it added to the effect in a lot of ways.

The monster could stand an upgrade I suppose. None of the actors were particularly good at acting in it but were just about perfect for the type of film.

I'll call myself mildly pessimistic.

Disco Joe01 Jun 2015 4:40 p.m. PST

I liked the first one so to me it doesn't need to be remade and if it is I know I will not go and see it.

A reviewer, in a local paper here in central California, said the tsunami was depicted going the wrong direction to what would be the case with a Major San Andreas rupture?

Anyone seen this yet?

What a crock. You would have far better margins doing a full blown blu ray special edition than this.

They could have Kurt Russell do a cameo, like Arnold did in Rundown.

Have Kurt drive up to a big fight in The Pork Chop Express, look around and say, "Nope, been there, done that." and drive off.

…the tsunami was depicted going the wrong direction …

With all the impossible actions going on in these type movies it amazes me what people have problems with.

Sounds more like the reviewer was trying to find something wrong with the movie.

Does anyone else feel like we're living in a time where it seems no one wants to come up with an original storyline?

I mean is it just a problem with studios hedging their bets on rehashing old movies, cartoons and comics?

Don't get me wrong; if the story is good enough and there's real room for improvement then I'm all for it but I'd love to see some "new" fresh stories

I saw "San Andreas" and will post a review of it along with a couple of other ones on my movie blog tomorrow. Stay tuned.

As for the planned remake of BTILC, I'll just take a wait-and-see attitude. I've resigned myself to remakes for the most part.

The Rock needs to go back to wrestling.

maxpower01 Jun 2015 5:50 p.m. PST

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! This makes me angry

kidbananas01 Jun 2015 5:51 p.m. PST

I like The Rock, but this is a bad idea.

Sudwind01 Jun 2015 6:02 p.m. PST

Why? The original is a cult classic.

evilcartoonist01 Jun 2015 6:02 p.m. PST

I like Big Trouble in Little China.
I like the Rock.
I don't like the Rock in Big Trouble in Little China.

Now, Tom Hardy -- well, mostly because I can see him driving a truck.

If the Rock plays the same smarmy pretty boy act he usually puts on then no I dont think I'll be seeing this one.

Kurt Russel was perfect to play Jack Burton. We wasnt a pretty boy. He wasnt some pump up jock in fact he wasnt very physically imposing period. What he was was a reluctant ass kicker who got swept up in something that he knew nothing about and just went along for the ride. He was as clueless as the audience as to what was going on. Kurt Russel played Jack Burton with a gritty wit and humor that will be hard for the Rock to pull off.

The biggest problem with the Rock is that he isnt a good enough actor to lose himself in a character. No matter what you always see the Rock in the character.

McWong7301 Jun 2015 7:02 p.m. PST

Good observation Chuck

Tgunner01 Jun 2015 7:29 p.m. PST

Yeah, no…. I'm not feeling this. The original was the best! Just leave it be. Maybe release a director's cut and remaster it. It's perfect the way it is.

Coelacanth01 Jun 2015 8:07 p.m. PST

This is moronic. Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) was the hero: Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) was the comedy relief. Does anyone think that The Rock won't be playing the hero? Count me out; the original is just fine.

I heard abd read it was a sequel not reboot.

Patrick R01 Jun 2015 9:58 p.m. PST

The joke was that Jack Burton wasn't the hero, he was just the comedy relief who was convinced he was the hero. Putting the Rock in that role and expect him to do his usual shtick isn't going to work.

That YT vibe was hillarious.

As for the remake, JUST SAY NO and step back.

I completely agree with the sentiments here. And besides the dubious acting talents of the Rock, where will they come up with all the memorable performances by the secondary characters/actors.

Chuckaroobob03 Jun 2015 7:36 a.m. PST

I love the original. And I'll see the remake or sequel.

This idea deserves to be sent to the Hell of Being Cut Up Into Tiny Pieces. Or maybe the Hell of Boiling Oil. Well, one of the Chinese hells, anyway.

Inkpaduta19 Jul 2015 8:13 p.m. PST

When you get it right the first time there is no need for a remake. They got it right the first time.
