JSchutt is that for 15mm figures or larger figures or all heights? |

15mm, I use 1/2" square by .04 thick plastic tiles from Plastruct. One fig per base. 1/285 uses the above with 3-4 figs. 3/8 square for command/scout and other stands with 1-2 figs. 28mm is on the GW standard round base. 20mm Vietnam are on 5/8" square by .06 inch thick styrene. Might be .04 inch, can't remember at the moment. |

I use standard poker chips for cavalry and larger figures and heavy weapons team. I use mini poker chips for single figures |

I use stainless steel sheet metal. It has almost no thickness. |

Artists mounting board plus magnabase. 2 to 3mm? I like a thick base, easier to line up in storage and to pick up. |

Haven't based any 15mm since my Traveller days, and that was just squares of cardboard. My 28mm stuff is usually mounted on steel washers, about 20mm diameter. Lag washers if I can get 'em, since the hole is much smaller. I'd have thought 10mm washers would make decent 15mm individual circular bases. A bit of weight towards the bottom never hurts; my plastics generally stay where they're put :) Haven't measured the thickness, but washers are normally proportional to the diameter (smaller ones are punched from thinner sheet metal). |

Irishserb – what are those thicknesses in metric please? I really can't get my head around the "imperial" scales and bits of an inch. John T |

I have plastic 20mm (1:72) figures, and for several years have been weighting the bases. I normally use a card base, with a strip of magnetic tape on top (not because it is magnetic, but because it is heavy), glue the figures on and then weld more melted plastic (spare spruce) on to completely cover the base. I would guess the overall thickness of the base is about 5mm, which gives weight and means that bases sit together, without overlapping each other. My mounted commanders are on oval bases using the same system, but individually based foot commanders are on a 20mm diameter card base, weighted with a 2 euro cent piece, then plastic welded down all around as before. All my bases are 3mm thick. The width (frontage) and depth depends upon the rule set and the amount of depth needed to base the minis with some terrain, etc. Primarily I play Impetus, so 3mm thick bases, with 120mm frontage, and the depth is usually 60-100mm depending upon the unit and amount of terrain/landscaping I wish to add. Just for the record, the "height" of a base is normally referred to as it's "thickness". Why rhe OP has such an aversion to that term is beyond me. Depth refers to the distance from the front edge of the base to the rear edge of the base. Frontage is the distance along the front edge from one side to the other. Sometimes the words "length" and "width" are substituted. Just thought I'd add that to the conversation. |

Something thick enough to pick up with your fingers. Often use MDF or balsa/basswood cut to size and painted with oil based paint (white on back, green on top) to seal. Mount figures with white glue. Mix up white glue with green/brown whatever latex paint and smear onto base of figure and base. sprinkle on some flocking, shake lose and you are done. |

@John T: That's 1mm or 1.5mm, respectively. 28mm minis get ~3mm thick bases. I've been putting my single-based 15mm stuff on pennies and 1/8x3/4" fender washers, so about 1 to 1.5mm thick bases. Mass-based are about the same. I want to put my 3mm minis on fairly thin bases, definitely NOT 3mm thick like some people I've seen. IMO, thin bases look better. |

Like Dynaman I use vinyl floor tiles. This is because I do 10mm a lot, and even a 2mm base looks like a step! |
