Here is a companion article to the one I posted earlier regarding Columbus Depot Jackets. This article was published by the Company of Military Historians, and authored by Les Jensen, a man well-known for his accurate and exhaustive research of Confederate clothing and equipment. The 2nd part deals particularly with the jackets issued by the Richmond Depot, so readers of both articles will get a good look at both major theaters of the war and what was, overall, most commonly worn. link |

I have been convinced, for quite a number of years, that the answer to the question of "what color should my confederate infantry be painted" has to start with an understanding of the way the Confederate QM department worked. With that understanding, even if only cursory, you can get a better idea of what type/style of figures to use for a specific regiment/brigade/army/etc which will then lead to an idea of the appropriate palette based upon how long they had been in the field at the point you want to portray them. Having said that, in the end the units are YOURS the Imperial "yours") and you can pretty much paint them how you choose, but this article, and others, at least gives a foundation from which to work. Apart from the modelling of this topic its just top research into the ACW. There has been several hints that the Confederates wore a sack coat. How common was the confederate sack coat? |

The only known wide-spread issue of a"sack coat" to Confederates was what is also known as a North Carolina" sack coat, or uniform coat. It was a straight-body affair, with a standing collar and 5-7 buttons down the front. Non-functioning black epaulettes (really just trapezoidal strips of black cloth)were sewn on the shoulders. The coat was made from jean cloth, and could have either a stand-up collar, or a lay down collar. Both styles were buttoned at the neck, with no opening, in the manner of federal sack coats. SOME coats had black non-pointed cuffs, but they are the exception and not the rule. These coats were issued in 1861, and by the summer of 1862 would have been worn out and replaced with other coats/jackets of the newer NC shell jacket. Here's an image of a NC soldier in 1861 wearing one of these coats.
Here's one with the collar folded down.

having said that, there were some issues of jackets/coats which fit the general description of a sack coat. Fred Adolphus has an excellent article dealing with them here: link |

Thank you, many miniature units have some sack coated figures in them just wondered how authentic they were. The Confederate coat seem to be not of the federal pattern with the fold down collar. Several re-enactors have sack coats and now seem to be of the wrong pattern for the Rebs. Ha! have you thought of producing a book or books on uniforms, or anything to do with the American Civil War? |

I'd second that request for a really good, properly researched uniform guide specifically for wargaming purposes! |
