… South China Sea Are To Be Military Bases. "* China has set up weapons on its artificial islands in the South China Sea * The new development is seen as China trying to solidify its military power * It will see increased tensions and sparked concerns with military officials * Australian navy may start conducting more patrols in show of disapproval Tensions over the South China Sea are set to escalate after it was reported China has set up weapons on its artificial islands that are still being constructed in the much-disputed region. The Asian superpower and the United States have locked horns over the area, with Washington most recently warning Beijing not to challenge the U.S. Navy operating in the South China Sea saying 'nobody in their right mind is going to try'…"

From an engineering standpoint, this is an amazing project. |

Can't believe no one is calling for a world-wide boycott of China yet, over all the reef destruction in the area. Oh well, I guess I just did. |

Makes perfect sense for an industrialized nation with 20% of humanity's population to want to secure its raw materials import routes. Viet Nam/Malaysia/Philippines combined are ~220million or about 3% of humanity. Just putting things in a different perspective… Hell, if the small regional players REALLY wanted to exert their authority, they'd be building fortified artificial islands like their antagonist is. |

The Philipines put an old LSD onto one reef – does that count as fortified? IiRC all claimants have some type of out post – China is just doing it bigger and with more "attitude" |

"* Australian navy may start conducting more patrols in show of disapproval " I do so love it when these sorts of statements are made by people who should know better. |

I said this before in a similar thread -- what's the worry? Rising sea levels will make these "bases" more problems for the Chinese than they're worth. |

How will these artificial islands stand up to Typhoons in the area? |

Once the concrete has set – you could probably get them back into action in a week or so. Possibly sooner the bigger they are and the more construction units that you can employ. Think D-day Mulbery harbours (non US) |

Just another attempt by China to steal something that doesn't belong to them (like Tibet). Look at the claim line. It is ridiculous in size and scope. |
