Does anyone here play mini's on a hexed board (ie…ASL boards)? What scale do you use? 6mm/10mm/15mm? Any pictures to show what it looks like? I was thinking of cheap 3"-4" inch hexes, flocked with some cheapish "paper" terrain? I have little to no patience making terrain. Painting mini's is my limit. So….3d terrain is NOT an option. Just seeing if any gamers out there do this sort of thing and if they have pics to share? Also….side question. Where could someone pick up cheapish hexes in the 3" to 4" range? Thanks |

Not ASL boards but this is how I do it! link link Unfortunately Hexon II is not cheap. |

Thanks Jim Nice looking board. I'm wondering if there are cheaper alternatives to those hexes. |

You can make a very nice hexed board in a few minutes yourself for practically nothing. You just need a triangle with sides the size of hex you want, and a piece of felt to become your hexed board. Here is a thread with a brief outline of how I did it (with lots of tips and tricks from others): TMP link Some terrain is really easy to make. Use CDs for 5" hexes. For woods, just cover the CD with a variety of clump foliage. Cut strips of fabric for roads and rivers. |

GHQ TerrainMaker is relativly cheap. |

Not ASL boards but this is how I do it!Unfortunately Hexon II is not cheap. Indeed Hexon II is not cheap, but the boards in the pictures you link to are Heroscape, not Hexon II! |

Two more thoughts: if you really hate even making terrain, download photos from Google earth of your terrain. Size, and print on to card stock then cut out hexes to match your hex size. OR Buy a Commands and Colors style map board (GMT sells the board for $20 USD) then scout around for the hex terrain pieces on Ebay or flea markets… |

I play Spearhead on either 3 inch hexes or 60mm offset squares. Hexes and grids really speed up play. |

Here's some examples of games using Hexon II: link I play Memoir '44 rules on Hexon terrain (sorry, no picturs I'm afraid). |

@MajorB Apologies, you are indeed correct. I am blessed with sets of both Hexon II and Heroscape. |

@acctingman As mentioned in other comments above it is possible to make a cheap hex cloth or board. I have done so many times. All you really need is a template and a steady hand. |

Rather have hex pieces I can flock, place together, throw on some cheap printable 3d terrain and call it a day. The "drawn on" hex template onto a cloth map doesn't interest me. Thanks! |

Try using a HOTZ mat. Here is an adaptation of Mark Walkers World at War modern combat game. 3" hexes and 6mm GHQ tanks. link |

Think you're right MajorB Went to their site and that stuff looks spot on. Thanks all! |

Thank you MajorB for the mention, I run a second site that also has some hex information, here is a link, just click on the 'hex terrain' tab. LINK – commanders.simdif.com |

I have used 2mm, 6mm, 15mm and 20mm on Hexon II terrain. Range of rules. Yes, Hexon is expensive, but given how much I've used it, one of the best wargaming purchases I ever made. |

The thing with Hexon is once you have it – you have. While that might sound obvious, I have spent much more on trying out alternatives that I ever have on getting Hexon. |

Yes, Hexon is a bit like a decent pair of boots. Endlessly used and lasts forever so worth investing in. |

I was thinking of asking the reprographics dept. at the school where I work to expand squad leader board hexes to 4" and print on to A3 then join them together. To make them even better, cut out the hill hexes and mount on flat polystyrene to give a simple 3d effect without much work at all. However this is still in the pipeline and I'll probably make a terrain mat. |

I have never considered Hexon II expensive. In most cases it's not much more than a cost of an army. Most folk have lots of army's. Hexon will outlast several armies. If cost is an issue either make a hex cloth. Use the Hexon 6 tiles as markers so you start just using it for hills. This is what we do. Woods are patches of Angel Hair with trees on and road card strips lightly sprayed. Buildings are our own card bot the are lots of free patten s on the net depending on scale. |
