I have spent quite a bit of time recently painting South Indian armies for a game set in Ceylon. Not to put too fine a point on it, but under the FoGR rules these armies are pretty much rubbish. So, do other folks paint not so great armies? 1) NO, I paint only history's big winners. Rome rules! 2) NO, but then sometimes we have to use my splendid winners to portray losers. It pains me, but I am a good sport about it. 3) Yes, everyone needs to paint up targets. 40 Yes, I enjoy the challenge of commanding the underdog. |

3. I always do both sides but as 5. I choose interesting scenarios. |

I'm almost always painting both sides for historical battles so, inevitably, I've painted up troops with less than stellar reputations. |

Bashi Bazouks. Yup. The thing about them is that it's never your fault if they lose but you get all the glory if they win. |

40! – or should that have been 4) – thats a typo I always make too!!! |
Yesthatphil | 26 May 2015 2:32 p.m. PST |
As Mick in Switzerland … tend to do both sides (so the winners and losers) but try to pick good topics … Phil |

I'm in the middle of building 6mm Napoleonic Austrians for Blucher. I've 500+ Boxers for TSATF. I have early war French for WW2. So yes. |
John Armatys | 26 May 2015 2:55 p.m. PST |
Like Yesthatphil I normally do both sides, so the last 12 months have seen me painting, amongst other things, 15mm ANP and ANA. |

4, most definitely. Not by informed choice, of course. I just tend to not research quite as well as I should. I pick forces that seem fun to paint, or that I have a soft spot for. Early Libyans, WWII Italians, and I just finished painting up some ducks… |

My Celtic army has never won a game but I love the little tartaned devils. And they always put up a good fight before running away in fear & terror. |

Most less-than-stellar armies that epically lost a big (the most recent) battle usually epically won at least another one before that. That would make the big, uber winners the underdogs for those situations. So, I'm not sure which of my armies are less than stellar (unless you count quality of paint job, in which case I don't know which ones aren't!), but I usually do up all sides of a conflict. |

Oh, I thought you meant, "is my painting less than stellar on my armies…" |

I have Austrians and Spanish, you decide |

Whatever I feel like. I tend to prefer footy barbarian armies, and that variety are usually doormats. But then again, my first love was Anglo-Danish, so, yeah, what Saber6 said! |

I paint armies I find visually interesting. Don't care it they suck when played. Don't care if I lose for that matter so long as I had fun. |

The 1897 Greeks are arguably the worst army in late 19th Century Europe. I had just planned to do a small contingent, but it grew into a whole army. I also like colonial era bashi bazouks, who are colorful and individually brave, if very poor troops when employed in quantity. I tend to do things that interest me; raising units of uber truppen is not my thing. Grelber

Oh yes, I love an underdog. My favoured ancient army is the all-conquering, umm, Numidians, and I love my WWII Belgians. Really must do Dutch some time too…. :-) |

I paint both/all sides so I take the rough with the smooth. So my British paras co-exist with my Rumanian garrison troops, Prussian Landwehr with the Imperial Guard and tribal levies armed with sticks alongside Imperial Roman Legionaries. |
Rrobbyrobot | 27 May 2015 6:03 a.m. PST |
I have WW2 Royal Yugoslav forces in both 15mm and 28mm. They're fun. Well, they're different… I once managed to knock out a PzIII with an FT. That was fun. |
epturner | 27 May 2015 6:12 a.m. PST |
My Doodle militia for the AWI and 1812 look purty, can't fight, and must be very fit lads because they run away a lot… But I do love them… Eric

4)You have be a good commander to win with the underdog. Good armies are usually more forgiving. |
Weasel | 27 May 2015 12:29 p.m. PST |
I tend to enjoy underdog armies, though once I play them, they are ALL less than stellar :-) |
