Mad Max-esq. gaming is going to a summer project for my son and I. I'm looking into rules now and there seem to be some great choices. But I"m having trouble deciding on a scale -- 20mm and 28mm both seem reasonable, but I'm new to the post-apoc subject, so I know I don't know the advantages/disadvantages of each. And I don't know the manufacturers. Any recommendations? |

It depends on whether you want to focus on the personalities or the vehicles.. If personalities go with with 28mm, if vehicles, then 20mm will be easier to collect. |

If it's a road race game, go with Matchbox. Otherwise I think you'll find table space at a super-premium. Plus they are dirt cheap and after a quick spray of black, easy to repaint and modify… |

I'd go with 10mm and use the Dropzone Commander Resistance stuff. You can get a bunch of vehicles on the table in a relatively small space. link Not only do they have some really cool vehicles that are perfect, you will also have a DzC army when you are done and can play that too. |

As others have said, if you want a long, strait road race, either go matchbox or smaller or use a long table in 28mm as we did. link If you want to have character based combat and figure vs figure melee on the vehicles themselves, I'd go with 28mm. 28mm is more expensive, but 1/43 vehicles for conversion are plentiful (see our post above again) and converting them is alot of fun. |

I've done it in 6mm and now 20mm with 'pedestrians'………(with some crossover into my 20mm zombie games)….. For manufacturers, check out Stan Johansson from the USA( if only for ideas!p&p is high for us in Europe) Irregular Minis 'riot' range for lightly armed 'gangers' also Apocalypse Minis on Ebay- auction For weapon fits etc for Matchbox cars, have a look at The Scene, nominally 15 mm but his range of 'support weapons' is heroic! |

Drivethrurpg.com has a variety of rules for post apok vehicle gaming. They even have a Dirt Track race game you could probably modify. |

In terms of scale as others have it depends on if your primary 'unit' are vehicles or people. If it's vehicles the smaller scale it better, if it's people then 28mm makes more sense. -Will |

Hot Wheels- and Matchbox-size cars are hard to beat in terms of availability and price. You can go to ebay, thrift shops, and garage sales and get a box of beat-up cars for very little. Since you're going to paint and mod them anyway, it doesn't matter that they are beat up. |

You can't beat 20mm Hot Wheels/Matchbox as said. Hot Wheels/Matchbox are generally 1/72 and/or 20mm. I do not see how they would work with 15mm? If 15mm, then look for Micro Machines (if you can afford them) as these are closer. JADA is generally fits with 28mm. If you can find their own range of diecast combat cars, this is a boon. Johnny Lighting is straight up 1/72 but are darn expensive for what they are. |

Along with the Irregular 6mm vehicle line, Microworld Games previewed some awesome 6mm post-apoc stuff earlier this year: link |

If you go 20 mm take a look here 23 different sets – 99+ different figures, 2 bikes, 1 trike, 2 vehicles, Armor and Light weapons, Turret weapons and special weapons. Overseas and Canada email for shipping options. link |

15mm…. But I am biased. Or think of this 2xscale Car Wars is 1/90, which is spitting distance of HO and 15mm…. While matchbox cars are Big, all the Trucks are pretty much dead on. |

Thanks for the help. I'm thinking that 20mm is the way to go -- though my son likes the Dropship Commander idea (we'll be playing a intro game of Dropzone Commander at Origins next week, so we might have two summer projects). Now I have to find a rules set. Thanks again -- you've all been a big help. |

I'm doing it in 20mm, a "Road Warrior style" game has been my Spring Project. Matchbox/Hot Wheels conversions are really fun with the right bits. See here: link
If you are interested. The only drawback to the 20mm scale is there are not a lot of infantry/driver figures for it so I end up giving a lot of money to Stan Johansen. Walt |
