Currently, the only button we have is "!" indicating something objectionable has been posted in a message. Should TMP have a "like" button, similar to Facebook?

(a) Yes, add a "like" button.
(b) Yes, but only if a "dislike" button is also added.
(c) No, keep it the way it is now.

Yes. It would save any number of "looks great," "nice", etc. posts, while at the same time, making it easier to give the poster an "attaboy."

Bandolier25 May 2015 4:37 p.m. PST

Yes.

Grelber25 May 2015 4:49 p.m. PST

I'd like to see one. Sometimes, I like somebody's painting (or whatever), but don't know what specifics to cite (good blending, excellent color choice, that kind of thing). I don't see the need for a "Dislike" button, though.

He already has … numerous times.

No,kyoteblue, John the OFM and his work site persona, Winston, will like the idea of dislike and dislike the like.

I think I said that "right" but JtOFM or Winston or both will correct me if I was mistaken.

charared25 May 2015 5:47 p.m. PST

"Like" Yes.

"Dislike" not so much.

skippy000125 May 2015 6:21 p.m. PST

As long as there is no 'Heil' button, I don't care.:)

We have been through this a dozen times. It came to a vote on a poll at least twice, where it was voted down twice.

Are we going to vote on the same damn thing until we "get it right"?

WHY does TMP have to be like other websites. A "LIKE" button is for people too lazy to actually write something.

No to the Like button.

Winston Smith25 May 2015 8:18 p.m. PST

And I do not want a "Dislike" button either.

nazrat25 May 2015 8:19 p.m. PST

No from me as well. What's wrong with actually taking the time to write a comment? Do we have to do everything in the easiest, most impersonal way possible? Does it really save so much of your precious time?

sneakgun25 May 2015 9:51 p.m. PST

Like a like button.

Saves me typing 'What X said'.

Dislike would be interesting too, some sites/forums have these but they can be something of a two edged sword.

While a like button would boost the nimber a responses to an article I feel it is better to leave a comment if you do like it.

C is my vote

Yesthatphil26 May 2015 4:25 a.m. PST

I used to be in favour of the 'like' button (and would use it if there was one) …

I'm less convinced of the 'don't like' button … could be the new vigilante tool now the stifle table has gone. A new way for self-appointed majorities to gang up on minorities.

Not sure it's needed now TMP's a friendlier place – but stick to the positive if you make the change.

The Gentlemen at Frothers have been kind enough to point out how this could bring back all the animosity we had with lists of "most stifled".
They are too shy to post here, but I took the Liberty to pass on their most helpful advice.

Cerdic26 May 2015 5:54 a.m. PST

This again…..?!!!

RavenscraftCybernetics26 May 2015 5:57 a.m. PST

why? so we can be like facebook or youtube?

Martin Rapier26 May 2015 6:59 a.m. PST

"They are too shy to post here"

Or possibly the ones making the comments have all either been banned or left.

Personally, I think a 'like' is pretty harmless, dislikes are something else, although it can be a way denoting that the swivel eyed loons are in a minority. Just have a look at how the BBC News forums work for examples.

Probably less relevant if you aren't discussing politics and current affairs. Oh I forgot, this is TMP…

No.

Mute Bystander26 May 2015 8:44 a.m. PST

Teasing on the liking the dislike, JtOFM, BTW.

Honestly, I can forsee the "cheerleading" of a "like" button becoming a case of [like on LAF] "Say something nice" piling on more than actually noting something beyond the norm.

The lack of times I have seen criticism (even constructive) on LAF leads me to believe too often these kind of comments become a case of "everybody gets a participation trophy."

Would I use a "like" button? Yeah, I am lazy. And that would devalue the whole point of the "praise" IMO.

Weasel26 May 2015 11:21 a.m. PST

I usually don't use them on any sites I visit.

Personal logo Flashman14 Supporting Member of TMP26 May 2015 12:58 p.m. PST

I'm for a Like button. It's not about making TMP rotely copy other sites – it's about utilizing innovations others have invented that are well suited for an image heavy or sentiment heavy discussion board like we have here.

To a degree I get John's point about voting until you get the result one wants. But as I peruse old threads in the course of doing research on this or that, I see a lot of snoozed accounts and conversely, there are frequently new names in the current subjects I visit. So, if the population of the site changes shouldn't the current population get to determine how they want TMP to be? Especially something as harmless and banal as this.

Besides, there's nothing to stop anyone from posting endless poll suggestions to remove it once it's instituted.

jeffreyw326 May 2015 4:59 p.m. PST

Goodness--now I'm lazy? :-) If I can express what I want to express with a click rather than a post, then I'm being efficient. Yes, this has come up before, and probably will again until "the right answer" is approved. (I seem to recall stifles getting a lot of discussion back in the day).

StarfuryXL526 May 2015 5:38 p.m. PST

I vote for a "Meh" button.

charared26 May 2015 6:21 p.m. PST

…A "LIKE" button is for people too lazy to actually write something.

Winston Smith/OFM…

You found me out…

I NEVER want to write ANYTHING!!!

Maybe a reddit up vote and down vote system?

Winston Smith26 May 2015 10:25 p.m. PST

I have no idea what you are talking about. So therefore I oppose it. grin

Martin Rapier27 May 2015 3:45 a.m. PST

We could always 'like' the AiW board?

"The lack of times I have seen criticism (even constructive) on LAF leads me to believe too often these kind of comments become a case of "everybody gets a participation trophy.""

It is pretty rare for anybody to criticise pictures of toys on internet forums. If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all etc.

I can recall the odd time people have made (constructive) criticism on TMP and been shot down for being unhelpful!

The endless picture parade on LAF does get a bit tedious at times, but given the volume of traffic, it appears to be what many people want.
