"The prospect of combat is enough to leave even the bravest soldiers paralyzed with fear. That's why armies have long mobilized their troops with battle cries and other military slogans. Some of these "war woops" were merely animalistic screams or yells designed to send a chill up the spines of the enemy, but others had political or religious significance that transcended the battlefield. Below, learn the stories behind eight of military history's most intimidating rallying cries…"

What happened to 'Ayo Gurkhali!', which probably caused more brown adrenalin to run down legs than most.

Let's not forget (in Gàidhlig) "Pog mo thón". A battle cry uttered by many a Glaswegian going to a pub in Pollok.

The battle cry of the Cornfederacy in my Imagi-Nation Game of the Civil War is the words of Miss Fidelia De Leigh said at Miss Pitty-Pat's Ball in Gone with the Wind. "Fiddle De-Dee!"

She is the heart throb of that famous warrior for the South General Holden MaJohnson.

The game is "Magnolia's, Mint Juleps N' Gritz" and the game and campaign assumes that the war was NOT fought about slavery, but about the attempt of the Northern Aggressors to stamp out the Southern way of life, emblemized by Magnolia's, Mint Juleps, and Gritz.

That is a distinctly limp list.

Indeed – I was half expecting to see "I say, chaps, that is just NOT on, I'm afraid!"

I wish I could remember which regiment it was (14th Punjab, I think), but an Indian regiment "of impeccable fighting reputation" from the North-West Frontier had a regimental song which included the line "On the other bank of the river is a boy with a bottom like a peach, but alas I cannot swim."

Now THAT's a war-cry to put the fear of God into an enemy (not to mention a reluctant ally)…

John the Greater15 Jun 2015 6:37 a.m. PST

I guess it is a -1 on the morale die roll if the 14th Punjab is providing rear support?

I have always been partial to the cries of the 51st New York and the 51st Pennsylvania before they took Burnside's Bridge – "Give us back our whiskey ration!"

Jemima Fawr15 Jun 2015 8:27 a.m. PST

+1 surely? They'll keep going forward…
