I'm painting fox tails carried by my Native Americans. In the interests of variety, I went looking to see what colors foxes come in and found this on a website about Newfoundland: "Newfoundland's Red Fox comes in a range of colours- red, black, silver, yellowish, and a mixture of colours called a patch phase." Could anybody tell me what colors are mixed together to get a patch phase fox and what their tail might look like? Grelber |

This, perhaps
Someone says: "This is actually a Cross Fox, a colour phase of the Red Fox. The Cross is actually a black dorsal stripe intersecting a black band across the front shoulders, just barely visible in this pic.It is also locally called Patch Fox from its patchy appearance. Silver Fox is another colour phase of this same species. The breakdown of % occurrence for the colour-phases in NL is roughly 65% Red, 25% Cross and 10% Silver." |

I only ever saw a fox in the wild once, in the Spatzizi plateau. It was black and the tail had a light grey tip (probably white hairs mixed with black hairs). |

All the foxes in my area (Northeast Connecticut) are reddish brown or gray. I've never seen a patch fox before, learn something everyday. |
