Just received a link to US Naval Institute Historical Ship guide – map and description of 164 US Naval Ships spread across the US.

About 40 of these remain property of the US Navy and are on permanent loan to the various entities. The Navy inspects these every year by congressional mandate via the Donated Ships Inspection Program.

One of the fun things I used to do as a Naval Officer was perform the annual material condition inspection of the former USS North Carolina BB-62. Kind of like being give the keys to the kingdom if you are a Naval Engineer with a love of history and a desire to see all the cool things far off the tourist trail.

thank you,Jimmy for helping the North Carolina remain in tip top shape. last times there with my "deck ape" brother-in-law, and our mightily bored spouses was back in 2001. she was in great shape. too disabled now to do the tour justice with my 9 year old grandson, but he and my son had a great time there a couple years back.

it had to have felt strange for you following in those past footsteps! and thank you for your service!

PS: the "deck ape" comment was by no means an insult. just the customary jibe from a "jarhead". besides, if i had meant it, my late uncle,(pre-and WWII veteran as well as Korea) a retired Master Chief Bosun's Mate with 37 years service would kick my butt from the grave!

Haven't visited in years but need to…

I remember the day she scored her last 'victory' by
damaging another vessel so severely that the other ceased
operation albeit temporarily.

The Barry is likely going to be landlocked if it stays. A new bridge is going up downstream that it will not be able to pass under.
