I have to say that although I have a life long enthusiasm for Napoleonic gaming I am somewhat fickle when it comes to other periods. A book, a film,an article, a new range of figures can take me in a whole new direction at the drop of a hat. These infatuations can last years or days and they are constantly changing but I know of gamers who will only game say; WW2. Is this the norm? Do most people flit from subject to subject or do they resolutely stick to one period? |
Martin Rapier | 22 May 2015 3:30 a.m. PST |
My interests are diverse, I have stuff for everything from pre-Biblical Ancients to Star Wars. My core periods tend to feature rifles though, although they might supported by blokes riding horses, driving tanks or flying SU-25s. |

Green Tiger I am like you. I am committed to Napoleonics and Pre-dreadnoughts, but it only takes a momentary glimpse of something to lead me down the road to a new project. The best thing, if you don´t want to be buried under one night stand projects, is to try to weather the storm until the urge passes. But in this case, you will have to do as I suggest, and not as I do. |

Worth a try… I've even tried not reading certain books as I know they will "set me off". Then again – i suppose it keeps the hobby fresh? |

Butterfly. I've come to realise that many projects will have a limited life, and budget time and money accordingly, though – or simply decide not to commit. |

I'm not a one-period Pony, so to speak, but I'm not a butterfly either. I constantly add to my collections, but new periods for me are pretty rare lately. That said I added two new periods in the last 2 years: 6mm Seven Years War and (soon) 15mm Vikings. But on both cases I saved up, and bought everything in one throw and paid to have it all painted. The Vikings and Saxons are at the painter now, and it is my only pre-gunpowder period. I honestly think that after the Vikings I am "done" adding new periods. Anything "new" will be more along the lines of self-contained one-off games like chariot races or jousting, where you need a "game board" and maybe a dozen playing pieces. |

I'm pretty good at sticking to the periods I collect. I'd get very bored if I was just doing the same thing over and over again so I move between three main periods and a few skirmish periods. Typically I'll add a couple of units to each collection a year. I have enough but it's still fun doing the odd bit. |
Yesthatphil | 22 May 2015 6:39 a.m. PST |
No … I'm interested in the whole of military history, tailing off round about the 1960s (after which I think objectivity and availability of evidence becomes a problem*) … So the right project at the right time will become a welcome addition to a lifetime's study. Phil *30 years ago I would have excluded WWII – would study it but not wargame it – but it has receded into history by another few degrees and I am much happier bringing it back to life in miniature these days. Indeed, I do |

Phil surely some projects come more into prominence than others at certain times? I flit off things but I always come back (which is handy as I've already got some books and figures on the go). My interests cover a wide range of periods (and to be honest I have considered most things at some point) but I get mad keen on something for a bit then something else comes and overtakes it … |
War Panda | 22 May 2015 7:34 a.m. PST |
99% WW2 but I've some medieval and Viking/Celts for SAGA…I've bought Napoleonic stuff but know it'll never be enough so I'm terrified of starting to paint it! I have WWI planes. I really want to game some modern era stuff like the Falklands War but just can't find the time… Am I a butterfly, probably more a moth |
Yesthatphil | 22 May 2015 7:42 a.m. PST |
Absolutely, Green Tiger … I'm just advancing the theory that over a long period of time the jigsaw of our interests makes more and more sense as a full picture … I have had a long and rewarding association with Ancient and Medieval (and the Society of Ancients – now in its 50th year and a constant friend) but actually started with Napoleonics and Lace Wars (courtesy of Charge!) Sometime back, my activities would have looked very bitty (although my interests might have made sense) … these days, taking advantage of opportunity, it looks much more of a piece (to me, at least). A very large, very active, very ponderous butterfly. I have the following interests each of which I have huge collections of figures in (painted) and more unpainted). I am passionately interested in each equally, and devote lots of time to. Ancients (Early Ancients, Imagi-nations of Old kingdom Egyptians, Assyrians, etc. Classical Ancients (Hoplites) Alexandrian Successors. (I bought Norbert's whole army). I haven't gamed with these but the beauty of the army was irresistible. Renaissance- The Wars in Italy from 1450 to 1530. Six Armies, over 200 each Swish (Swiss) Swinns (Landsknechts) Land O'Goshen (Burgundians) Italian Mercenaries, what a Byzantine Army would have looked like had it survived, and of course- Turks. The Army of Ikea (commanded by The Nattering Nabob of Negativism himself) Thirty Years War- Two armies, the Catholic Confederacy and the Calvinist International. The 18th Century- War of the Austrian Succession probably over 2,000 figures. Six Armies, The Princessipate of Saxe Burlap und Schleswig Beerstein, The Kingdom of Bad-Zu-Wurst, The Kingdom of Flounce, The Grand Duchy of the Grand Duke of Gorgonzola, The Empire of Gulagia (Russian) with it's capital at Gullagin's Island, and the Empire of Ikea again. The American Civil War- Two armies of "Woodens" 30mm figures. Mid War and Early World War two- 20mm Then there's naval games. Siege games. So I have interests in many many periods and growing in more. My next project is to get my Mid-19thCentury Game going (the Rules are called Die Fledermauser)but it's not really a war game, it's a game of silly operatic plots, and so forth. I abhor and detest Napoleonics. Won't touch them. I have also two massive armies, one Zulu of over 500 that I've never used, and another Mongol army of over 300 in the same fate. |

I game 10 periods and I'm sticking to them. Oh, look… |
Jamesonsafari | 22 May 2015 9:16 a.m. PST |
It is only by strength of will, lack of money and fear of my wife's disapproving glares that I manfully stick to the periods I am currently working on. All kinds of stuff I'd dabble in if I had the time/money. |
ironicon | 22 May 2015 9:34 a.m. PST |
I try to stay focused on my project (AWI).I've done a Brigade of Perry Brits and a similar number of Continentals (28mm). I decided to do some 40mm AWI figs (Trident) which I like very much. I'm starting with British Light Bobs and Morgan's Rifles. I want to put in a good word for Doug and the Miniature Service Center, and their great service. So yes I've changed up a bit, but am still doing AWI. I have been doing this a very long time and I get more done this way. |

Recalcitrant pitbull. I am 100% dedicated to completely following my own esthetic, which since you are not in my head looks however consistent or fickle to you as it does. |

I have been a butterfly for a long time. But in the last couple years I have found myself doing better at not buying any new projects and actually getting older projects underway. I have to admit that finding One Hour Wargames has gone a long way towards getting me focused on getting things done so I can actually play rather then sitting in boxes waiting for "someday". |
Dynaman8789 | 22 May 2015 2:01 p.m. PST |
I only flutter about with boardgames. I know I'll never get round to painting and basing the stuff I have already – much less entire NEW periods/subjects… |
Zargon | 22 May 2015 2:10 p.m. PST |
More like a big fat moth trying to get in at that light source :) GreenT its part of the joy of the hobbie if you ask men some come to fruition others alas not but the history and joy of learning something is worthwhile to me, and then there's the other yearnings in Fantasy and Scifi, oh my.. Cheers happy gaming |
