If you could pick any miniatures company to work for, which company would you choose?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut21 May 2015 7:37 p.m. PST

Hasslefree, Khurasan, or Rebel. I did a stint at Dark Age Games, had a great time, but had to move on.

That depends on a number of factors… not least of them the answer, to "who pays best?"

Pictors Studio21 May 2015 7:48 p.m. PST

Uprising Miniatures, those guys are great.

J Womack 9421 May 2015 7:50 p.m. PST

Reaper. Based in Texas.

nevinsrip21 May 2015 7:56 p.m. PST

Kings Mountain….I own it.

Sundance21 May 2015 8:05 p.m. PST

Rebel Minis or Peter Pig.

dsfrank21 May 2015 8:16 p.m. PST

I have worked for Games Workshop, Agents of Gaming (AOG) & Chessex – at this point I'm not sure if I'd venture back into the gaming industry

KSmyth21 May 2015 9:03 p.m. PST

Perry Bros. Miniatures. Love their work and understand they are incredibly nice people.

Winston Smith21 May 2015 10:04 p.m. PST

I would work for Old Glory. It's only a 4 hour drive.
And it would get me out of the cold selling comcast.
I need some Government troops for my Sword and the Haggis project.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian21 May 2015 11:08 p.m. PST

Depends a lot on what you mean by 'work for', as well as who it is. I've designed games, sculpted scenery pieces, made terrain, written background material for lots of companies – at least a dozen – over 25 years. These have ranged from princes to tyrants to utter scoundrels. These things are not immediately clear at the outset, and sometimes not until late in the experience.

My special thumbs up goes to Frank Chadwick who, when GDW went under, still paid me from his own pocket for a work that was never going to get published.

Grimmnar21 May 2015 11:55 p.m. PST

There are some pretty interesting responses above.
I have worked for GW in the past. Went for a job at HBH.
I think i would like working at PP.
Don't think any "one man shows" could count. Though Rebel Mike looks like a swell guy to work for in all the right reasons.
There are others that are just not sitting in my brain this late at night.

Black Scorpion22 May 2015 1:49 a.m. PST

I'd like to work for Black Scorpion but I'd never give myself a job. In fact if I wasn't in charge I'd have fired myself a long time ago for sheer incompetence .

Green Tiger22 May 2015 2:33 a.m. PST

Ha – well if you want to live in penury, give up every other weekend, give yourself a hernia and get very rough fingers from all the clipping off – go ahead – I suspect it would be the same for any – if its a plastic company you can substitute carcinogenic chemical fumes for lead poisoning – but hey enjoy your discount !

Fat Wally22 May 2015 3:22 a.m. PST

Peter Pig

Patrick R22 May 2015 3:27 a.m. PST

Been there, if I had to work for such a company, I'd pick one with things like health insurance and pension schemes, fixed wages, and I'd problably pick an administrative job that leaves me with time to enjoy the hobby at my own leisure rather than be feel the urge to spend my free time "away from the hobby/work"

Buckeye AKA Darryl22 May 2015 4:23 a.m. PST

Kriegspielers/Heritage/Empire…so that I could keep those wonderful 15mm lines in production, or at least cast enough for myself!

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP22 May 2015 5:03 a.m. PST

Thank you Sundance, Grimmnar and F Wally! We only employ 3 full time staff and a sculptor/factotum(unpaid). They are worked very hard indeed! They deserve more money, but all wages are paid at UK rates with tax etc.
Appreciated

martin

Regards22 May 2015 5:57 a.m. PST

Warlord Games would be my choice. I enjoy the product and the gentleman I have met at the conventions from the company seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Paul Sawyer and John Stallard were great to talk with at a convention a couple of years back.

Games Workshop pre-corporation accountant run days. The creativity and variety of their early output tells you a lot about the way things must have been run behind the scenes. The company would probably be bust by now, along with most of the old companies, but it would have been a fun time.

Ambush Alley Games22 May 2015 6:18 a.m. PST

It's certainly nice working with Elhiem and GZG! :)

All the miniatures guys I've worked with (barring the mandatory exception that makes the rule) have been nice, reasonable people that I believe would be a ball to work for. Sadly, I have no talent in sculpting, casting, or anything else particularly useful to such an endeavor . . .

Shawn.

Zeelow22 May 2015 6:20 a.m. PST

peter Pig and 15mm.uk

Shadyt22 May 2015 6:39 a.m. PST

Prince August/Mithril, Reaper, Dark Sword, Thunderbolt Mntn.

53Punisher22 May 2015 7:07 a.m. PST

Reaper or Mantic. I actually applied to Mantic at the very beginning when it first started up.

dsfrank, I remember you from your days at GW! I met you several times when you were the GW rep that came to Days Of Knights in Newark, DE. In fact, I was looking through some old school GW stuff a while back and found a packet of info and order sheets you sent me when I asked about ordering the old Dungeon Floor Plans sets from you. You were always a great and enthusiastic guy to deal with. 👍

Gone Fishing22 May 2015 7:13 a.m. PST

I can only speak regarding my experience as a customer, and with these gents' presence on TMP, but Irregular, Alternative Armies/15mm.uk and Peter Pig all seem like the nicest guys: polite, helpful, with lots of fun, innovative products!

ironicon22 May 2015 9:36 a.m. PST

Not a miniatures company but I wouldn't mind working for the war store.

Old Contemptibles22 May 2015 9:51 a.m. PST

The one that paid the most.

Fergal22 May 2015 9:59 a.m. PST

Crossover Minis

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP22 May 2015 10:12 a.m. PST

LOL !!!! I would suggest that a very precious few (if any) of you would ever embrace the joy and ecstasy that you are envisioning by working at your favorite miniature company. let your hobby remain your hobby or forever be pulling white balls of talc from your nose? By the way, Old Glory is looking for another full time caster at the moment.

I have heard a first account of a alcoholic getting a job in a bar to break his habit.

Company D Miniatures22 May 2015 12:23 p.m. PST

Company D miniatures for me

Buff Orpington22 May 2015 12:55 p.m. PST

Any that paid at least minimum wage and didn't require me to inhale fumes.

Dogged22 May 2015 3:08 p.m. PST

Perry!

Weasel22 May 2015 4:14 p.m. PST

White Wolf back in the day.
(Yes, they made a few miniatures, so they qualify for the thread ;) )

Mute Bystander22 May 2015 5:41 p.m. PST

Sorry, none. Seems like a lot of work and… drum roll… working with a public that (well,I don't,) don't understand what is involved.

Khusrau22 May 2015 9:51 p.m. PST

couldn't take the 80% pay cut…. :-)

Master Caster23 May 2015 6:47 a.m. PST

I work for Thouroughbred Figures now. The owner is a great boss and gives me my pick of parking spots. I have been the employee of the week every week this year!

Texas Jack23 May 2015 12:14 p.m. PST

Pendraken, because Leon is a really nice guy, and because I would finally make my US Army M2 Medium tank.evil grin

Weasel23 May 2015 12:57 p.m. PST

Master Caster – Sounds like ballot stuffing! :-)

Wulfgar23 May 2015 7:54 p.m. PST

Working for Northstar might be interesting, but it would be a very long commute.

Baccus 6mm24 May 2015 1:58 a.m. PST

As I am actually about to advertise for a caster the nominations on the poll don't fill me with optimism…

Fried Flintstone24 May 2015 3:00 a.m. PST

Empress if they give staff discount :-)

Gone Fishing24 May 2015 10:48 a.m. PST

A thread like this does show that there are a lot of really good people in the hobby.

BW195925 May 2015 7:03 a.m. PST

I'm with BuckeyeAKADarryl, the old Heritage line, but would also like to add Mikes Models. What can I say I'm old school

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP28 May 2015 6:06 p.m. PST

Why do I find it funny that there are people who want to work for companies that no longer exist?

Weasel28 May 2015 6:14 p.m. PST

Change history of course :-)

Shadowcat2002 Jun 2015 1:02 p.m. PST

Warlord could be fun.

Personal logo DWilliams Supporting Member of TMP02 Jun 2015 7:50 p.m. PST

Russ, what is the pay range and benefits you are offering for that casting position?

Just one more question, do you perform a full body search your employees before they leave the factory?
