So I have a copy of GQ2 somewhere, but I cannot find the right box. I'd buy another set, but they seem to be pretty scarce. Is there a place where I can find the mods for GQ1 which are in GQ2? TIA …

Not that I'm aware of (and I have looked in the past until I found a copy of GQ2). The mods were pretty extensive (like new ship logs). So I'm afraid you're going to have to locate a copy of GQ2 (or find your old copy) to get the mods.

If you are looking for the WWI mods (most of the GQ-2 rule book), then I agree with Coastal2. You could alternatively buy FAI. grin

For WW2 however, looking at my GQ-2 rulebook, the mods for WW2 were in a section called "Advanced Rules". There are 8 single pages of text, 2 single pages of combat charts replacing those in GQ-1, and 1 page of weather charts. Since these are small pages, one could photocopy them all on 6 single-sided 8.5 x 11 inch sheets of paper. I don't see any new WW2 SDSs, and in any case, it is better to make one's own with a Word Processor, using the guidelines in GQ-1. That way, one can put all SDSs for one battle/campaign on the minimum number of 8.5 x 11 inch sheets. Example:

Since the guy at Navwar has so far declined to reprint the GQ-2 rulebook, and all outlets I know of are out of it, I am sure that if you PMed someone on TMP, they could help you out with those WW2 pages.

Thanks both. Have been wondering about FAI – should I … ?

Charlie 1223 May 2015 6:04 p.m. PST

FAI is the WWI version of GQ3. It uses the same mechanisms with appropriate changes for WWI combat.

I haven't seen GQ3 either yet. I assume it's a bit different from GQ1 and that FAI is a standalone variant?

FAI is the WWI version of GQ3. The two rulebooks are meant to stand alone, so you only need the book for the period you're going to play. (I should note that the numbering of the rule sections is actually continuous, as if they could be printed together into one giant book. Maybe they were intended to be stored in the same binder that way….? Dunno.)

The GQ3/FAI system is considerably more detailed than GQ1/2, and as printed, plays slower and takes longer to learn. However, the GQ3/FAI system does an amazing job of packing a lot of "feel" of detail into the game without the usual massive increase in mechanics. The methods L. L. Gil used to streamline the process of play and pack unique personality into each ship design are impressive and effective. I really like FAI, and I've put a lot of work into making it play faster. These days I've got it playing nearly as fast as my old GQ2 games used to.

There are so many differences between GQ3/FAI and GQ1/2 that they're really completely different games. I wish the new game hadn't been named "General Quarters" – the only things it shares with the old game are the author and the subject.

Interesting – I must think about that.

I gather from a response I got from Mr Navwar that he hasn't ruled out a re-print of GQ2, but he is concerned that the printing costs would make an individual copy too expensive. No idea what sort of figure he has in mind, but there's still hope!

Hmmm; that's a more positive response than the one I got last year. I think I'll give him another call, to keep the pot boiling. Both GQ-1 and GQ-2 still have a lot to offer, and *deserve to* still be in print.

EDIT: Done! Interesting gentleman, and yes, there is definately still hope. The modest price increase didn't sound unreasonable to me either, given the elapsed time since the last printing.

Excellent! Well done, and thanks. I shall wait with interest.

I see incidentally that someone is selling 80 1/3000 ships, painted, with GQ1 and GQ2 on Ebay at the moment – less than 24 hours to go!
